Hello guys, i thought i lost this forum for good when the original link i had disappeared ?
Just found you guys again browsing around
Anyway, my question to you guys, ive noticed that when i floor my throttle (E53 2003 3.0 Diesel) i get quite alot of black smoke which doesnt seem to clear up. This can be quite annoying and i personally find it quite embarassing
does this have anything to do with the particulate filter? ive tried using redex diesel cleaner a few times but nothing !
any advice will be appreciated

Welcome back fella,
Your question black smoke, this is usually caused by too much fuel in relation to air also known as running rich.
I would start with the cheapest option first your air filter (unless of course it has already been changed) a dirty air filter can cause black smoke,
made a big differance when i did mine. If you want to DIY there is an excellent post by thedweeb in the how to section showing you removal
of various parts in detail .

How long ago was it serviced as said above, the air filter, etc will make a big difference.
Worst case scenario is the particulate filter but this is the last resort as they are not cheap.

Mine was smoking before I had the glow plug control unit changed. Stopped after that.
I had to change the control unit as under very cold condition, starting was difficult.

Hi Raj,
No PF in these - they are too old

Yes blingsta - no PF in yours or any E53 X5 - the newer one's (E70) have it.
Hence the straight tailpipes rather than pointing down on the diesels...

Sorry sanj have to disagree with you buddy, our cars E53 X5 3.0d do have particulate filters fitted to them
from 2003 onwards i believe. check out link below.

No apologies necessary buddy - glad to be corrected!
Never thought we had them on ours.
I apologies for the duff info!
Would have thought they'd do a better job of the smoke though. It is embarrassing, especially when you floor it at night and see that stuff in the lights from the guy behind you...

I would have sworn that the E53 did not have that, so much so I would have sworn on Sanj's life

Yep facelift models do have them afaik i remember reading a thread on xoutpost and someone on there was adamant that they were fitted to facelifts.
I wasn't 100% sure and is also the reason why i have never changed the exhaust on this x as when i did it on the previous one imo it looked great but was ARPITA as it was constantly covered in soot

As others have said, facelift models do. It's the same story with the E46 facelift models. I had a 330d sport and was glad it did have one as I hated the downturned pipes so went with a Milltek exhaust and had no issues with plumes of black smoke.

Have run the Realoem parts check against my '05 E53 3.0d using the VIN and the only exhaust parts at the front are these:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=18&fg=10
DPF is an optional retrofit if the oem catalytic converter fails. Otherwise it reports as 'No parts fitted to this vehicle'. I don't remember seeing such a system fitted last time I was under the car. Are we sure that a DPF was always fitted to improve the environmental situation? No mention of a DPF in the handbook whereas there's a whole section on them on my new E71.
Happy to be corrected, but on the face of it at present no such beastie on my E53......
.......or is there?

I've always thought we didn't have PF, the down pipes just emphasised that for me...
Could Real OEM not be wrong?
