Keys...... Programming and fixing

Just got an X5 4.6is and was sold the car with two keys, one opens the car and turns the ignition on but cannot start the car, the other key only starts the car.  I've tried the programming tips (put keys in, unlock button and lock button three times etc) yet neither changes in any way.

Any experience of the same problem?  Fixable or not, without mega bucks?

Thanks to all your lovely X-peeps.

Sounds like the first one has not been programmed into the immobiliser, or it has failed but it has been programmed into the central locking.  Is the engine cranking but not firing, or doing nothing?  The second key sounds to be the opposite.

Check the procedure you are using is one of the two in post #8 in this thread which covers key re-programming.

Procedure 2 worked on mine, but not Procedure 1.  It will only cover the Central Locking.

If it's a chip failure then a new key is probably required.  If it's not 'programmed' into the car then it just needs adding by a a Dealer.

One key can open the doors and turn the ignition on but not start the car, the other can start the car but not open it.  So frustrating hey?

Shall check thread now.  Thanks for info in meantime.

But does the key turning the ignition on, crank the engine?
