E70 40d M sport bumper unclipped?

Hi all,

I noticed the other day that my rear bumper was unclipped causing the lower tail gate to get stuck when closing.

I took it to the dealer and to my surprise they said that I will need a new bumper as the tags clips were damaged because i got hit from behind. but that was impossible because there were no scratches/ marks on the bumper.

I had to involve the service manager and really insist to this be further investigated and I won't be happy till the full bumper is removed and inspected as I am still under warranty.

they accepted to investigate and removed the rear bumper  where no clips were broken but the outer one were weak.

My guess is that this was a weak design and they managed to realign the bumper into place but I was not really satisfied with the whole scenario and requested an investigation.

they call me to get the car booked in as this seems to be a known issue and there is a rear bumper repair kit issued by BMW as hey admitted not to be aware of this.

my question: has anyone got this repair kit installed on their X5?

Thanks

My new 40d had this problem too - it's in for repair right now! Will let you know what they did and how they repaired it when it comes back :) in the meantime they have given me a olive Cooper Convertible with black wheels lol - enjoying the open top go karting right now :D

Thanks for replaying. I will appreciate your comments on the repair when you get your car back.
Is this being done by the BMW dealer? where they aware of the issue?

cheers

I was just about to take mine in for an oil service on Monday and as I was walking up to the car I noticed the top of the bumper was sticking up in two places about 40cm apart under the number plate.

When I took it in, I asked them to take a look and they said there's an issue with the bracket covered under warranty. Its going back on Tuesday to be fixed. Ill let you know what they do.

I also bought it from non local dealer and the car will be repaired by my local bmw dealer. The dealer I bought it from is covering the cost.

I just hope this repair kit is worth it.

Hello,

Same thing on my 40D M Sport. The local dealers Warranty guy was looking at my alloys and noticed the bumper at the same time.

Getting booked into the body shop soon for it to be fixed. They are also going to respray the lower part of the boot as it has scraped the paint off.

Oh, and four new alloys :-)

Hi All.....had the same on mine when i first got the car.  BMW fixed under warranty but the next time it happened they didnt.

The stealers quoted me £2k to fix it last time so i decided not to bother as i know there is a problem.  In the end i fixed it all for £170 but more on that later.

The problem seems to be that if the bumper is pushed the clips push in then as the bumper flexes out again the clips ride up over the attachments for them causing the bumper to ripple up.

Living in london I had decided that considering the way people park the bumper was going to keep getting pushed in and it was just going to keep happening.  I ended up getting a bumper for £70 on ebay and got it sprayed for £100.

I think its a design flaw but trying to get BMW to admit to it is never going to happen.

I have the same problem on my E70 rear bumper - I have had it removed and replaced once already and the rear bumper has again become unclipped.

I think it happens if you lean into the rear bumper whilst loading/unloading.

Does anyone know the part number of the rear bumper repair kit? - and what it does? annoyingly my car is out of warranty now.

Yes clegsr, that is precisely the predicament am in at the moment with mine too :(
Would be real handy if someone had part No's of repair kit, to reattach the bumper moulding to bumper bracket. Fingers crossed

I've just picked up my 10 plate e70 40d m sport and have the exact same problem,mi noticed it on huge first inspection of the car and they obviously have not fixed it. Because the raised bumper has been rubbing the lower tailgate it has been rubbing and has took paint off

It's going back tomorrow for this along with other problems!

Why the hell do dealers try and send stuff out hoping you won't realise, so frustrating!
