Dead Battery - What does Fuse 61 do?

HI,

So, i have had my car for 3 weeks now and have now encountered my first problem.... I have come back from a 2 week business trip and the battery on my X5 was dead...

I spent some time this evening removing fuses to determine where the current drain was coming from and found out it was Fuse 61 (50A fuse). The fuse cover says this is for the Fan??? The Power drain for the car is 130mA when asleep after 40 minutes (should be 50mA or less). This isn't too bad for day to day driving and regular use of the car, so not something i have to fix immediately. I would like to look into it in a bit more detail.

Does anyone have any information regarding what is actually on this circuit? I have spent a while trawling the internet looking for info but so far have found nothing...

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated..

2002, E53, 4.4.

The fan continuing to draw current sounds like the Final Stage Resistor. Search for this or 'Hedgehog' (I kid you not) and you'll find similar problems solved by others by replacing the FSR. Can be done as a DIY job in about an hour if I recall what others have posted.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I did consider this,I had the hedgehog fail on my old E36. The symptoms were a lot more severe for me then though. (Higher current, intermittent fan operation....)

Most of the info i've searched for have said Fuse 64 was responsible for the Aircon/FSR not fuse 61, does anyone know if this is true?

Knowledge of wiring not my strong point, albeit ironically I managed to diagnose my FSR & replace same.

I sat in car switched off engine, locked with fob and pressed button immediately again to disable the alarm interior sensor. I then sat in silence and heard the faint sound of the fan working............ordered from C3BMW & fitted it myself soon after.

Early FSR failure may also be detectable from fan seeming to be less powerful &/or near labouring at times.

If you think it will be any use to you then by all means take a look at these links

All wires look the same to me ;)

Good Luck

Thanks for the info..

Using those systems i can see Fuse 61 appears to go to the electric fan. This fan has a transistor type switch which is controlled by the engine ECU. I need to look into this....

They also show that fuse 64 is definitely for the final stage resistor.

Thanks

No pob's

I take it you saw early option to select diagrams dependant on engine type & whether LHD/RHD albeit wouldn't have expected a difference for this.

i did see it the options. There were no differences for the parts i am interested in.
