And the IT Industry takes another scalp..
Heard today that I'm now 'at risk' of redundancy and as of 31st Aug my current Management job ceases to exist. If no replacement role can be found then I will be joining the dole queues shortly thereafter. The timing sucks (but then it never is a good time) but no doubt we'll muddle through somehow. I just hope any redundancy package at least gives me some breathing space but no guarantee of that at all.
We plan to keep the 'X' for now as it is likely that any new job will need me on the road and whatever I get for the X is likely to have to go towards a replacement anyway so no real advantage except perhaps in fuel consumption, but then if I end up contracting I'll be billing for that too.
Best get looking for summat and polish up the old CV....... :type:

Sorry to hear that buddy. You never know something may come up at your current place as you said, but if not your plan of digging out your CV is the right one. Every cloud and all that...
Never a good time as you say, but I truly and honestly hope it all works out for you. If you do have to use the X for your next role it may be a blessing in disguise- not a bad motor to blast up and down the motorways and A roads!
Fingers crossed for you and your family!

Always a hard time and the uncertainty makes things worse. I was lucky enough to be relocated by my company last time they made redundancies as they wanted to keep my skills. Hope it all works out for you.

Very unfortunate news. It would make sense for your current company to keep your skill sets, and heres to hoping they do.
In the meantime its never a bad thing to update your CV and dip your toes into the market, get in contact with a few recruitment agents, see how the market is in general. You never know, you may find something that takes your fancy sooner rather than later.
Hope it all works out for the best.

thats very unfortunate, best of luck on the hunt richard.
as you say its never a good time and nobody's' safe. you're doing all the right things by looking at other opps in the company plus dusting off your cv. plus also reaching out to your networks of friends. after all these decisions are made in corridors and pubs than in boardrooms.
on a positive note most of my close mates who got redundant in the last couple of years are doing way better than they were, after getting a lump sum to their hands as well! here's hoping the same for you too!
you're one of the most knowledgeable and helpful ppl in this place (btw is there any subject you've not poked your finger into lol), so i have all the confidence you'll come out of this smiling.
so yes, keep the X!

Bugger - sorry to hear this Richard.
If I can help in any way, let me know. I could always drop you details of my workplace, they may be able to use your skillset?
I know you'll land on your feet, for sure. Onwards and upwards my man!

Sorry to hear that Richard. I hope you get a decent payout to buy yourself some breathing space and hopefully get some decent family time.
I finished up my IT role in Feb and took 3 months off before really starting to look again. Making some progress in the past the past few weeks, but I'm finding its all through my network and key agency contacts. Job Boards are painful, seems like a ratio of 50 applications per call back.
I had quite a lot of support on my exit so can PM you stuff around CV writing / searching if you want it.
Good luck, hopefully you'll find another internal role which buys you some time even if not the best role.

Having been in Engineering since leaving school I've been made redundant 3 times (site closures), Engineering and manufacturing were the earlier hit industries with IT and service industries fairly safe. Now they are being hit too, all I can say is this situation will make you stronger, it really isn't the end of the world and every time I've gone onto better things

Thanks for all the good comments, and yes for me every change has been on to better things too. It's just with a young son and me now getting on a bit age wise, I could really do without this hassle.....this will be the third time, with the first in 1979. TBH I'm more bothered about my Pension than much else....and after 10 years doing this job I guess I got a little bit 'comfy'. Never saw this coming though.....which also p!sses me off.

Sorry to hear that. Its not good at any time, but its funny how its always just when you really don't need it.
Wife has lost hers, and although its not the main wage its still made things very tight.
As others have said, you may well come out the other side in a better position after having a little break and with a little bit of cash in left your pocket.
Good luck.
