Few Questions

Post by shej » Tue Jul 02, 2013 2:04 pm

Hi all

Had a 2005 E53 X5 3.0d sport a few years ago. Now i am looking for an E70 X5 sport but there seems to be so many variants!

1. What is the difference between the x drive 3.0d and the normal one?
2. Some are 3.0sd are these the 35d engine? Is this the one to go for when looking compared to a regular 3.0d as more power and supposed better economy?
3. What is the average mpg expected for a 3.0d/35d as my prev x5 was quite thirsty -it is a big car however..

4. What are the essential options to look for-there's dynamic pack ??

Many Thanks

Model & Max Speed                              0-62        l/100km      Emissions (g/km)
3.0d (130 mph)                                        8,0          8,2              217
xDrive30d (2008–2010) (134 mph)          8,0          8,2              214
3.0sd, xDrive35d (146 mph)                      6,9          8,3            220
xDrive30d (2010-) (130mph)                    7,6          7,4 (38.2)  195
xDrive40d  (147 mph)                              6.6          7.5 (37.7)  198

The 'xDrive' bit is mainly a marketing gimmick as all X5's had XDrive from the 2003 face-lifted E53 onwards.  I think the '3.0sd' became the 'xDrive35d' and both have the same M57 engine, replaced by the cleaner N57 series on the current xDrive30d and xDrive40d (the 40d is still a twin turbo 3.0 litre just a different arrangement) which drops the a VED band or two.

Typical mpg will be in the high 20's to low 30's and nowhere near the 'official' quoted figures - no surprise there.  A number of 35d owners have complained about how thirsty that version is in real life.  It will depend upon your predominant driving type and style.  From 2010 the 8-speed gearbox was brought in progressively across the range to replace the 6-speed.  That helped fuel economy and emissions.

I can vouch or the 3.0sd being thirstier than my old e53 3.0d.  averaged 30mpg on a good run in the old one and now average 27mpg on a similar run........do love the power though  :)
