I have the black plastic smooth rear bumper. I want to replace it with a later version with the Sport Grill (M type) which I beleive are Fibre Glass and not plastic and can therefore be painted. Is this possible or are the bumpers not universal / interchangeable between earlier and later E70 models with different specs?

I would like to know this too, 2007 model SE.  BUMP, can anyone confirm or deny?!

I had to change the bumper and got one from ebay for £70 with a £100 respray.....better than BMW's £2k they wanted.

Anyhow after a quick look at realoem its not as easy as just changing the bumper as by the look of it you need to change the bottom panel of the rear quarter too.

Im not sure whether there is a change in shape because of the bigger plastics over the wheels too.

The M sport bumpers are not fibre glass but are thermo moulded plastic.
