Anyone else had a squealing steering column ?

So, its managed 2200 miles and the first fault has appeared. When you switch the engine on or off the steering wheel retracts / moves fwd. It used to be silent, but now makes a horrible squeal.
Looks like a visit to the dealer then , all under warranty, but have to be honest, why the fk can't I seem to get a car that just works without any problems ? It was bought because the last X5 would spit its dummy out & had withdrawal symptoms if it didn't go to the main dealer at least twice a month. It would seem this one is a little better but not by much. If this one starts doing the same its getting part exchanged for a Landcruiser V8.
