Well it's one of those days, just put my little smart car infor annual service & mot.

Car failed Mot on no abs or handbrake lights on dash, plus misaligned offside headlight, and advisory on tyre valves.

Garage investigated and appears there are 3 bulbs missing from dash, not removed by me and it passed mot at different garage last year. ???

Problem turns out to be a faulty steering angle sensor. So they rang Mercedes and guess how much a new sensor is :- £100 - no,
      £200 - no,
      £300 -no even close,
      £500 bit closer,

And you think BMW are expensive - Try £700 for it ?  :bangin:

That right £700 and the reason is the sensor is part of the leather steering wheel which has flappy paddles dry clever.

@@@@ @ff was my 1st thought its ridiculous. I can see cars getting scrapped for the electronics and started to consider this option or breaking it for parts, or part ex or auction it.

Looked on eBay and found a 2nd hand one for £260 which is working and advised should fit and so think its a bargain.

Oh yes the news gets better for all of us with getting Mots early.

The garage advised that since the car failed Mot (even though you can put it in up to a month early-mines about a week early) If it fails you then cannot legally drive the car, even if you have a few days left on the old Mot (as we did previously) and if you have an accident the insurance co won't pay out.

Not good and it sounds like it was tampered with too.  Last year some of the rule changes were in the process of being adopted, but now they're in force.

The reason for the 'no drive on MOT fail' is because the ticket is valid only at the time of the test but does not need redoing for a year, so if it fails then that overrides any previously issued ticket and of course the databases are all linked.

My X6 is due for it's first this year and it will be in well ahead as the original warranty ends at the same time.  That way any nasty surprises should be fixed under the warranty.  At least I hope they will!

Yes I have the feeling it was like tis when I bought it, but my brother in law got it mot'd at local garage and probably not spotted or checked.

Then again if I haven't noticed it a year and a half it doesn't say a lot for me either

Your plan sounds like a good one to get it fixed under warranty.

Got this off the Audi TTforum about mot's and since my cars problem was with the Abs which meant it didn't work I guess it's considered serious and so a prohibition notice

on the prohibition notice (PG9):

A Maximum 10 days Less than 5 defects in non critical areas;
B 4 to 7 days 1 defect in a safety critical area or 5 or more defects in non critical areas;
C Up to 3 days More than 1 defect in a safety critical area of the vehicle.
Definition of Safety Critical
Safety Critical defects or systems are those that could affect the control or directional stability of the vehicle.
Throughout this Guide, recommendations are indicated by a letter in the action column, as follows
"I" denotes an immediate prohibition
"D" denotes a delayed prohibition
"IN" advisory defects not considered serious enough to prohibit the vehicle.
They are reported on a Vehicle Inspection Notice explained in the following paragraph.
9. Where Examiners find on a vehicle roadworthiness defects not serious enough to warrant prohibition, they will advise the user/ owner using a Vehicle Inspection Notice. This notice is advisory only and does not in itself prevent further use of the vehicle.
Even if not prohibitable, some of the defects may mean that the vehicle is
unroadworthy and does not comply with the law.
Continued use of a vehicle issued with either a Delayed Prohibition or a Vehicle Inspection Notice listing advisory defect(s) risks prosecution under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations or Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations and so it will be in the user’s interest to repair defects as soon as practicable after they are noticed.
Note: A Technical Roadside Inspection Report (PG35EC) will be issued following a HGV/ PSV spot check examination in place of a Vehicle Inspection Notice used for other vehicles. This will include any advisory defects

If you think thats expensive.
My wee Aixam van needed new discs and pads for its mot.
You are supposed to put new wheel bearings on when you change the discs but the cost of that was getting silly.

Just for front discs and pads £412 at trade price!! 
I wasn't too popular when the garage took my discs off and all the bearings fell out though :s

Its ridiculous how they build things so complicated that you have to change several bits to fix on item.
