Cost of exhaust tip upgrade?

Post by Barney » Sun Jun 02, 2013 10:54 pm

I'm going to put my 40d in and get the exhaust tips changed from the crap small round ones to the 'M style' ones, a few on here have had this done (I think) so how much did the main dealer charge including labour?

Ta  :)

50i tip kit was around 450gbp and fitting including spraying of new surrounds was about 120gbp for me at local body shop. I think peter L got a full dealer quote?!

Yours was an E70 bus not an X6 sports saloon.....truck exhausts are cheaper... >:D

I'm saving up to get mine done as well but as the state are paying us nothing as one of us just exceeds the limit, it will be a while.......

That sounds better, prices vary a fair bit it seems, was that including painting the trim pieces?

The X6 requires two trim pieces to replace those around the new tailpipes, not sure about the E70.

So maybe the original trim pieces will be OK ? I think I need to make some calls to main dealers and see what prices they make up  :D

What about going to someone like Profusion Customs who can add custom tips (near oem look) for probably less.

I was thinking the same - that to me, is silly money to pay for some cosmetic tips (with surrounds).

OK, I'll give them a try, it's only the look I'm after. One thing though, would messing with the exhaust tips give them a get out on the BMW warranty? Silly I know but oem parts might seem cheap if they void my warranty later, they don't need much of an excuse.
I took a look at the surrounds today and they are very much suited to the round tips, I can't imagine that you would be able to fit wider exhaust tips without changing the surrounds.

Cut em with a Dremmel - they're already painted and made of plastic.

Use the new tips as a template.

Tbh they can only use it against warranty if it directly causes the warrantied part to fail. When mine was under warranty (and being as modified as it is) I still had all my warrantied bits replaced with no issues.

The tips won't be an issue. As for insurance, technically yes you do need to tell them. But highly, highly unlikely an insurance claim would be refused as most wouldn't know they were aftermarket.
