Sat nav update

So I am thinking of updating the map disc but cannot seem to find any info on what might change. If I stump up £200 odd for a new disc (genuine bmw of course) will I get any new/extra features??? I currently have a 07-1 road map Europe high. It also needs to be Europe as we are driving over to lake como in Italy in August and will be relying in the nav to get us there :'(

Thanks in advance

You're unlikely to get much in the way of new features as the disc just contains mapping data and points of interest around things.

Do you know which version of the firmware is loaded into your system?

I have no idea, how can I check?

So a new map disc won't give me full postcode them :(

Thanks

I think the OS version is found by going to 'Computer' via 'Menu' and looking at the numbers in the top row.  Assuming you have a Mk4 (DVD) system as I can't remember you car details.

Version 32 (the last one issued) should show as SW 4-1/00.

That could well give you the 7-digit postcode as well as perspective view (if not already enabled).  I think you need V32 installed - it's on a CD from Dealers to allow your Mk4 nav computer to read dual layer DVD's.

It only takes a few minutes to install the firmware upgrade as the procedure is (from memory):
  • Open the driver’s door, this must stay open during the entire procedure
  • Put your key in position 1.
  • Remove Map DVD from boot nav computer.
  • Insert burned software CD from Dealer
  • Small delay (maybe 30 seconds) then update screen with progress bar.
  • Let the computer think, leave your door open.  Installation should take between two and six minutes, depending on which computer you’re using.
  • When it’s done, it will say “Software Successfully Loaded”.
  • Remove software CD from boot nav computer, replace maps disc.
  • Confirm your update by pressing “OK” with the right button.

The system will now reboot with your new software.  I did it on my E53 and E46 from Versions 28 thru to 32 and never had an issue.  It's a lot more complex on the latest cars as the updates are massive and have unique licence keys generated from the VIN.

The Nav disc is around £180 and if you ask nicely the Dealer may even loan you their V32 disc or do it for you on site.  If you have to buy it they're about £10 I think.....it might even come with the later map discs.

That's version 27.1 which is probably what came with the car.  The first digit after the 1/ refers to 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30.  Although 31 & 32 were released I'm not certain they added anything to the Mk4 as they were really aimed at the then (2006) new type 3-series and newer cars with the first iDrive systems.  I can't remember all of the differences, but they were usually bug fixes or speed improvements or better routing algorithms.

Cool got to be worth a punt for a tenner, especially as I have to go into dealers to get a new locking wheel nut key anyway, what's the chances they have the update disc in stock :))
