Don't Laugh - Reg Plate Light Fix (E53)
Don't Laugh - Reg Plate Light Fix (E53)
So Jig needed another fix - okay, stop laughing now!
One reg plate light wouldn't work.
Took the piece off the car and split the piece off the painted part - 4 clips and some contact adhesive in two blobs (don't force it, just cut through).
Now you have to be able to get to the pcb and this one had water damage. You could see the discolouration and the green copper build up. Out came the dremmel to cut out the back part that would allow access to the back of the board.
Cut out piece:
This is the money shot - my crap soldering (don't laugh) and the pcb board showing how the 4-pin connector runs over the connectors. 2 for each light.
Soldering worked well but not considered a long-term fix. So I did this - I know, don't laugh!
It's a piece of wire directly to each holder. Then to be doubly-sure a bit of silicon to hold them in place long-term. Whole lot then sealed back together whilst still a bit wet.
One working reg plate light and a saving of £80 according to eBay!
If the board is completely gone, connect wires direct to the holders. Should do the same.

I need to give you soldering lessons!! My old boss would be throwing a fit. :banned:
One way to keep the moisture off is to spray it with circuit lacquer.
Good effort (for an amateur) though.....
So what did you charge him?

Re: Don't Laugh - Reg Plate Light Fix (E53)
I know it's pi$$ poor soldering but with the tools I had (one tiny soldering iron and a bit of solder) and the fact this was to get something working for nothing, man we (I) did good! Actually he helped today! Bless him.
Had no intention to post this as it is an awful job but it's not my car and I wanted to share what's in there for others in the future. Seems to have already worked on IanP!
I will be taking you up on soldering lessons Richard! )
And contrary to all my Indian beliefs I charged him sod all! I know - don't laugh. ::)
But now he wants me to go to Germany with him - that's enough to tip anyone over the edge!

Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)
