Just back from a trip and the Check Brake Linings warning message has come up.

Obviously a trip to the garage will be needed. First thing to go wrong with my X so not sure whether to go through BMW or a local Indy. Not mechanically minded so not looking to attempt the replacement work myself.

So, I'm calling on the wisdom of the knowledgable ones. What am I looking at cost wise for a set of pads (best case) or a set of pads and discs (worse case). What sort of price should I be looking for? Obviously BMW will be more expensive, but as the car has a FBMWSH is it worth me keeping that up? It's an 06 3.0d.

Sorry for the multiple questions, but would like to know what I'm looking at before starting the ring round the garages.

Just been quoted £132.00 fitted for the rears on my X6 including the sensor at a good local Indi I use. The dealer wanted that much for the pads and sensor alone.

However, it says I have 2600 (was 2500 last week ) ) miles left and after a recent service "Inspection" I have been told I have 3mm left on the inner pads. That will easily last me more than the 2600 quoted.

I've just checked back on the service history paperwork that came with the car when I bought it to help give me an idea on what may be wrong here.

The car was first registered in March 2006.

The front pads, discs and sensor were replaced in July 2009 at 39k.

It appears the front pads were replaced again in September 2010 at 55k. Although I'm questioning the receipt here because the detail underneath the main description states that the rear pad sensor was replaced at this time. Therefore I fancy it was the back pads that were done at this stage, although 55k on a set of pads seems quite long?!?

A BMW inspection of the car in October 2012 at 79k states:
Front pads 7mm
Front discs OK
Rear pads 9mm
Rear discs OK

The MOT done in March didn't pick up any braking issues.

The car is now at 87k. I suspect it's time for the rear discs to be changed from this. I've got an idea of the costs on these now through BMW from the receipts I've got. As the car has only ever been worked on by BMW does it make sense to carry this on? It's more expensive - would this ultimately benefit me on resale in years to come?

However, last question, what milege would you expect to get out a set of pads and discs on an X5?

Our E53 had its discs and rotors replaced on the front at about 50k miles by Natiowide Autocentres for about £100 all in.  The rotors were a bit pitted which was the reason for the change as it got an MOT advisory.  Pads were done at thecsamevtime.  Neither of us are 'demon brakers' which may be why they lasted so well.

Once you get beyond the warranty it's only a 'nice to have' for a Dealer Stamp, but not essential.  I service our 2005 E46 now and with a John Bull kit could probably make up a stamp......
