Looking for a recommendation for a bike rack

I have a 2004 E53 3.0d Sport - I'm looking to take two mountain bikes on holiday but I've never transported bikes on it. I do have BMW roof bars and could get a rack to mount onto that however as I'll be covering circa 2500 miles, carrying stuff on the roof just makes fuel consumption even worse than normal so rear mounted/tailgate universal type would probably suit me best.
Anyone got any recommendations?

Personally I went for the roof mounted racks as the rear racks prevent you opening the boot when they're fitted. The roof ones do make it a little awkward to get the bikes up there, I have to use a little set of steps!
Just have to remember to check your total height with the bikes up there too as I nearly got charged extra on the ferry last year till I suggested putting the bikes in the caravan for the crossing, then they said not to bother anyway!
Fi, I bought a pair of Halfords ones at 80 quid for both and they are excellent.
Regards
Gareth

If anyone is interested, you can get the high rear mounted (does not obscure reg plate) for BMW X5 2000 onwards from
www.micksgarage.com - I'm not plugging them or recommending them but I spoke with a guy on the phone for quite some time and he was very helpful and very knowledgeable. We'll see what it's liek when it gets delivered on Thursday
