Watch out for a tuned 13 reg black A6 tdi. The Feds came roaring out in front of me from a side road this morning so I obliged by keeping up with them for a look see. Nothing in it either and an odd sound when they gunned it indicated to me a state of tune as cans were standard. They were well grinning though!!

Thanks for the heads up!

I'm pretty sedate nowadays - too damn risky with plain clothes rozzermobiles everywhere.

How on earth can you say it is a tuned car!?

They don't do that

They have 3.0tdi down here which are plenty quick enough.

Certainly when I worked for them the cars all came from the 'Special Vehicle Operations' division, but that really meant uprated electrics (bigger batteries/alternators) for all the toys and stiffened/sports type suspension and better wheels and tyres than the usual cars - although those options can be bought by normal customers too.  Some had uprated brakes.

The engines were 'tuned' but only to make sure they were spot on, not for superior performance.  All cars were serviced at 3,000 mile intervals which made sure they were always in tip top condition.

That was no standard engine note. Maybe a remap for smoothness or something already broken?!

Ps and I did say indicated to me not that it was so there. If my car sounded like that I'd take it back! Then again it is an Audi...

Police officers are not known for being gentle with their cars.  The lot I worked for wrapped their first XR4i on it's first day on patrol.  Can't remember if it was the first or second shift that 'bent it'.  We used to see some seriously 'modified' cars including one unmarked Colt Gallant without a single straight panel on it - and that even included a bent fuel cap trim cover!!

It didn't go down very well anyway.

don't they make audi's sound gay to match the owners?

I think the mystery has been solved.

Owners manual on A7 biturbo diesel states that there is:
an innovative sound actuator integrated in the exhaust system which enhances the acoustics and perfectly emphasises the performance attributes of the engine. This feature consists of a speaker located in an auxiliary channel of the exhaust system, emitting a low, sonorous roar more traditionally experienced on high-performance petrol engines.
Of course this is rather pretentious, and cheapskate'ish of Audi and should be hacked to instead mimic the sound of a Tuk Tuk.......

With the advent of these electric cars which are supposed to be silent, there was an article some months back in the motoring press about manufacturers putting speakers in the front of the car connected to some form of sound effect unit.

I can just imagine the modders forums now, a Nissan Leaf with a Ferrari soundtrack doing 18mph........after twenty-five miles as the battery runs out.  Or even connect your iDevice to the system and play your own sound effects.

the m5 story.

'enhanced by a playback of engine noise through the stereo system to give passengers a heightened “acoustic experience.”'
