3.0ltr Diesel custom exhaust.

Has anyone opted for a custom exhaust to sharpen the look of their 3.0ltr diesel?

Is it possible to buy an "off the shelf" exhaust system or does it have to be custom?

I'm not fussed about performance or noise, just the look. I have looked at tail pipes on ebay etc but after looking at my exhaust, I really dont think they will fit.

I've tried removing my back boxes and running the pipes out the back, with new custom tips .
Don't go down this route. It ruined the low to mid range torque, and sounded chavvy.
You could get a cat back custom exhaust, to match the 4.8, but your bumper will be covered in soot, as the E53 has no particle filter. Would cost £ 450
Of get them to weld on two dummy tips to mimic the 4.8 tailpipes, no soot, no chavvy sound, no loss in power. No chance insurance can say its a performance mod. Probably cheapest option too
I never saw any pre made kits on EBay either

Thats an idea I guess. Could just pop out the plastic covers off and just weld straight to the backbox as I'm sure they are directly behind the covers whereas the tail pipes bend more into the centre.

Yes they are behind the plastic covers, Shadrack did his before he recently sold his X5, look back in the buy and sell section for when he had it up for sale to see the results.

I have mine done and am very pleased with the results and don't experience any more soot on the back of the car than before if anything I get less and have not noticed any difference in performance
Have a look at this thread

Hope this helps

Once I get through the dreaded MOT and various other things I've considered myself the fake oval tips.
The rear skirt has had the bottom edge colour matched so it looks is from a distance

Where would I get tips (of the right proportion) from over the counter? (at a reasonable price of course)

Found this on the american site Outpost

I can't recall the brand of the tips the americans used....I think they began with R but I may be wrong

I got the measurements off a 4.8is and went to the local place who makes custom exhausts then bought a pair of tips for £50 ish, I then cut them to fit the backbox and welded them on (this was very time consuming to get right but I didn't trust anywhere else to so it), also they need welding in place with the bumper on to get the look right then remove the bumper and finish the welding off.
