Is there any loss of coolant?
Is the temperature gauge reading high?
There maybe a small weep from a hose onto a hot exhaust .
I had an escort many years ago that used to have a foul smell every time I turned the cooling fan on, third was a smell of burnt coolant. It turned out to be a slight weep on the heater matrix, it would put me off using the heater it got that bad.
Hope you get to the bottom of this.

My 335i use to do exactly the same and never did find the cause of it and the coolant level never budged. Took it to the dealer and the tech said quite allot of them do it and it is nothing to worry about.
