Dipping mirror problem/fix

There was a thread about the problem of the passenger mirror dipping function in reverse 1w or 2w
ago which I can't seem to find now , but I promised answers on my investigation when mine went
for Inspection .

So , it appears it's a common problem , both mirror potentiometers on mine had failed .
The gears are plastic and sometimes they break/snap teeth off or become misaligned .
This confuses the system so it's not sure whether to dip or not .

The cheapest option to start with is to take it all to pieces and clean it , this sometimes works , but
more than not , doesn't and you've spent a long time for nothing .

However , the 'repair' pack is £140 per mirror even if you don't need all the parts in it , they don't sell
separately . So to repair totally it's nigh on £500 !! Or live without the option .

I guess if one is dis-assembled then it's possible to try to find the gears on their own for sale somewhere .

Hope this helps whoever asked me , coz I can't remember that either I'm sry  :-[

Did you fix yours or go without?

My Nearside mirror doesnt always dip when in reverse, and doesn't always go back to where it was when I disengage reverse.

I've got used to mine not working properly now.  I might try the clean up suggested by OP, but there are probably better things to do with my time.  I suspect the plastic gears are stripped.

For the time being , I've gone without fixing , until such time I can do further investigation into cleaning etc .

Will let you know of my finding as and when .
