I believe on the 'high' performance models , there was a speed de-restrictor option if
you went on a BMW Performance Driving Course .

Most german cars are restricted to 155mph - So with de-restriction you could reach that speed if your vehicle was capable which is very unlikely anyway! The E53 4.8is with 360bhp has a quoted top speed of only 153mph ::) Not bad for a big 4x4 brick  :o :P

So nothing to worry about on a 3.0d then  ;)

I Have asked BMW UK what exactly this means myself last year and the answer that they gave me was that the car is restricted to 155 mph max, my X5 has this on the option sheet as well so I was intrigued to what it means.

So why put the restriction on if it isn't capable of that speed anyway?

do you think its possible with a remap? I know my E39 530d would hit 150 easy. 243 bhp and 398 ft/lbs.

or does it have to do with final drive?

My guess is that is a electronic activated limit. But in reality, completely irrelevant in the UK  >:D

I suppose that if you tweaked a 4.8 with a remap or turbo addition then over 155mph is possible although the aerodynamics and weight will be a big issue.

I guess that restriction is a requirement for German market, upgrade required otherwise?

Wasn`t it because the US se models had lower speed rated tyres ?

I think they add it to "Sport" models across the board, a 335 Sport, or 535 Sport will easily hit 155Mhp (I think!). It sets the sports apart from the SE models.

My 3.0D LeMans/Sport has the derestriction, as mentioned its pretty pointless as the car cant hit 155 anyway.. but I guess as its just a programmed setting it does no "harm".

BTW for what its worth.. Flat out foot buried to the floor.. The 3.0D starts to drink diesel by the bucket load if you ever hit top speed.
