Which 7 seater, opinions please?

Hi, a mate of mine is looking for a 7 seater for him and his girlfriend plus children. At present choices seem to be between a Disco, Q7 and X5. Budget is £25-£30k. He's worried about the Disco reliability (please could someone post about was this resolved by this age/price bracket), has reservations about the Q7s size (probably cos there massive!)
Obviously my money would go on an E70, though the choice may be more limited due to the 7 seater requirement.
I would welcome ANY input or opinions about any of the three as I am guessing some of you will have experience of them.
Thanks.

How big are the kids that will need the seats? The X5 6th and 7th seats are small (under 12s only really - although I could put up with a 10 min journey in them @ 5' 11'') but a small adult could quite comfortably use the Disco's back two. If he really needs 7 seats regularly, then maybe an ex-demo Galaxy or S-Max may suit better. If he wants a 4x4 with occasional use seats, then the X is the one to go for.

Thanks for your input, i never gave much thought to the actual size of the seats, i just thought 7 seats are 7 seats! its a good point and fairly obvious now that you have mentioned it. Lol. The youngest are 9 and 6 for the record.

I have two friends with and who have had Q7's, and if you like to spend about £600+ every six months on rear tyres, go for it. Both have commented on the abysmal wear which was a big decider for one of them in getting rid.
They are big too, no really, too big for normal parking etc.
I would say that as the younger ones are smaller, the X is the best all rounder.

S-Max has to be the way to go IMHO even more so if it's for the girlfriend to drive most of the time. The others are just too big for every day kiddy use like shopping, school runs and the such + he'll save £10k+
)
I would also add that the S-Max is much easier for kids/adults to get in and out of the rear 6th & 7th seats.

This would appear to be sound advice

Extra seats in the E70 are near to useless and access to them isn't great. And it's too big for dodging about town if that's what it'll be used for IMHO. It is a great car for longer journeys but if its for the school run and about town then I'd agree an S-Max or similar would be much better and much cheaper.
However, if the extra seat are to be used only now as then and a 4x4 is desired then I'd find it hard to see past the E70...

Should consider Mercedes GL. Will get a very good one for that price. Extra seats are genuinely useful. Brother had one and loved it. Is big, though.
Also, not millions on the road so a wee bit more exclusive than some of the others.

Just an update on this and thanks to those who offered advice and opinions. He eventually went for a 2nd hand Mitsubishi outlander for the 7 seater duties and traded in the VW Tiguan for an Audi S3. I think a test drive may be in order.

Toyota land cruiser Deffo! Spend that much, and keep it for 20 years.

Oh missed last post. Oops! Good choice on both counts though.

Is it seven seats needed or just more than five, ie. six. If six is enough then the Mercedes R may tick a couple of boxes. 4x4 I think, plenty of room and a prestige badge.

Well he couldn't get away with the seats in the Mitsubishi (although i think he just wanted an X5 really) so he ended up with a 3.0d Msport on a 61plate.
