Oil burner or not?

I have a 2002 E53 3.0d, 6 weeks ago the engine was rebuilt. Today I checked the oil and it didn't even show on the dipstick, so topped it up and it took a litre.

This is my first diesel and was just wondering if this is normal?

Er no, it isn`t normal.
Keep a close eye on it and if it drops again, get in touch with whoever rebuilt it. !

Ok!

It doesn't smoke & drives like a new car! Hoping its just everything settling down, so fingers crossed that will be the only top up that's needed for a while!

Fingers crossed here too. It does sounds like the oil was used up very quickly though. I would get into the habit of checking daily until you have confidence that the level isn't moving.

Just a possibility that if the engine was rebuilt and the oil filled to the top mark on the dipstick then when the engine was started a lot of oil is needed to fill the oil filter etc.
If the oil level wasn't checked again after the engine had been run then that's where your oil has gone
Mine uses negligable oil between oil changes

A very good point!

I also done a bit of googling last night and it seems a lot of people seem to us a quart of oil every 2k miles.
These posts of "quart" oil im guessing is Americans! I'm not actually sure how much a quart is

A quart is roughly a litre. It refers to a quarter of an American gallon.

Im not sure if I should be concerned anymore, as a couple of other forums that I got directed to via google it seems a litre of oil over a couple thousand miles seems normal. ???
