Urgent oil brether advice needed

Post by Rayman » Thu Apr 04, 2013 2:28 am

I have just fitted a new oil breather. I have fitted the new vortex one In place of the toilet roll type that was fitted.
I fitted separated votex part by just dropping it into the hole in the manifold then fitting the housing part over the top and bolting down. Now just thinking about it,should I have used part of the old filter housing to hold the vortex part into the new housing I got. As there was nothing with the new breather to hold the two parts together.
I would appreciate some quick advise incase I have to take it apart before any damage may accure.
Regards Ray.

When I did my 320d it was one complete unit - the filter was inside the casing if I recall correctly

My mistake,

You should have the this lower part already in the engine bay:

The drop in the vortex then put the top housing back on:

The above is the loo roll type but basically picture the vortex where the loo roll filter is, and pop that on the lower part.

There is nothing in the old housing used to hold the vortex in place, it sits in its recess nicely and is fine once seated and bolted up correctly.

when I replaced my toilet foll foam one with the vorrtex type the kit came in 5 parts.

Housing
Rubber O ring
Vortex innner
2x rubber gasket seals

I put the O ring over the stub in the housing
Pushed the vortex into the housing having lubed the o ring

unbolted (6bolts) the old foam filter complete, although the foam bit did drop out
replaced 2x rubber gaskets
bolted in assembled housing/o ring/vortex
