X5 goes 2wd

Post by Benstan » Mon Apr 01, 2013 9:20 am

Was speaking to a mate who works at a BMW dealership in Germany last night - apparently the new x5 will be available in 2wd, Nissan cashcow style. Doesn't seem right somehow. Thoughts?

May not be right but so many buy the car to be seen in as opposed to use it as 4x4 that I can see it making sense.

Could it be part time 4x4? i.e. switchable....now, that would be quite cool.

With the 'base' model coming as a 2-litre it may be the only way to get the emissions right so that BMWs average carbon footprint comes down?

I can't see the new X5 being smaller than the E70 (maybe the same weight with 2WD and a 4pot) I can understand the need for it to bring down average emissions but that's not going to be a great car. The ML250CDi is awful with a 4 cyl.

I drove the ML250 CDI and have to admit, I felt it was fine.  The engine pulled well enough.  Ok not neck snapping fast but it wasn't slow either.  I'm not a big fan of Mercs, so didn't take the enquiry any further but I wouldn't have called the car awful.

Personally I'm disappointed that to date BMW haven't released the diesel hybrid.

Same here. ML250 was more than adequate. Power/torque figures are pretty much the same as the earlier gen Merc 320cdi engine (in E class etc) and way better than the 270 which was in the mk1 ML.

As Don said, not fast but more than sufficient for typical usage for most people who'll buy it.

I too see potential carbon average ( plus possible increased sales) as reasoning.

IMO "Sdrive  BMW X  models weaken image of specific X models.

I agree. Makes the (already muddied) BMW nomenclature even more pointless. They started with the X5 and X3, consolidated the nomenclature by referring to xdrive and now have sdrive X models!

Have to agree.  That said, if BMW could come up with an automatic 4x4 system, either selectable or not, that would decrease consumption and emissions.  I personally do require a 4x4 system but have no need for it to be permanent.

Can't say I am surprised if this is true but it is a bit disappointing if they go down that route imho  :(
