Hi

can someone please explain the correct rim and tyre size i need for my X5 E53 4.4i sport yr 2000, I want 19" wheels and the ones i look at on ebay all seem to be 4x 19" 285 45 19 or 4x 255 50 19, I thought they where different sizes fron and back? can you run a set all the same size then?

thanks
janette

Hi Janette

Yes you can !  As far as I am aware only sport models have wider tyres on the back , standard models have all the same size.

285 45  and 255 50  end up the same diameter - because the 285 is a wider tyre and full profile would also be larger diameter then the sport has a slightly lower profile on the rear tyres to maintain the same final diameter . So front and back wheels on the sport are the  same size even though one is wider !

I hope that makes sense  :)

9j is 9 inches wide rims suitable for 255/50 tyres
and 10j is 10 inches wide rims for 285/45 tyres.
the ones you'd found on ebay will fit perfectly on your car, their advert/compatibility chart is just a bit vague and their price a bit steep, well in my opinion anyway..
as already mentioned, the SE versions of the x5 have same size wheels all round so you could have that too if preferred.  :)

Do Sport models have 9J rims all round or 9J fronts and 10J rears?

I know the tyres are wider on the rears but wondered if the rims are too.

really hard to say, but i wouldnt want to pay more than £100 per corner for a very good condition wheel  complete with a half worn quality tyre. but then im a bargain hunter!  :greedy:

Here's a great guide to go by.
Good way to check other models and see if they will work. Seems pretty accurate.
I did notice on some models that it doesn't show package options and only base model sizes, (non staggered) but you can go to a newer model and see if they are different which should fit yours a may only need hub centric rings to center.

Use the likes of Gumtree as well, although it can be hard to see everything available in your area due to their search engine being poor, this has the advantage of reducing the amount of people seeing items and therefore lower prices.  I picked up a set of E70 wheels (18") with half worn tyres for £250. I had also seen two sets at £300 both being 19" with staggered widths, again with good tyres.  As I wanted winter wheels, it was the 18" for me.
