BMW 120d sport coupe advice needed

Post by B5tew » Tue Mar 19, 2013 7:45 pm

Hi all I am looking at buying a BMW 120d sport for the wife and wondered if anyone on here has any knowledge of them and could give me any advice on things to look out for.
The car will be a 2009 / 2010 manual - Sport / M Sport coupe
Thanks in advance
Stewart

I've got one. What would you like to know?

09/10 will be the MSport version - Sport only were pre-facelift.

If it helps, I spoke to Jason and was advised to buy 04 to 06 163bhp version, later versions shear a certain belt?? Jason knows.

Love the one we have. The more options you can get the better and from what I can remember the babybmw.net forum shows a lot of members have problems with the start/stop tech.

Get on there buddy and do a shed load of reading.

Great cars, with very few faults. You will find the ride a bit choppy on the 18" wheels withRFT's commonly spec'ed on MSport models. Economy is pretty good. The OH has just changed her 123d and was consistently getting 48/9 mpg and cheap RFL to boot

Frameless windows often stick when frozen to the ribber door seals and then won't drop properly when the door handle is used to open the door. This can mean that the glass is stressed when the door is open/closed. This can sometimes be reset but offen leads to a dealer visit to do so.

As and when you see something you like, more than happy to advise good/bad on individual cars.

EDIT: Was going to mention babybmw.net but got ninja'd by Sanj  :)) but will add to his post -

Never had any issues with start/stop ours was a 08/57 reg car and had done 37k. Also the economy gains for ED improvements for the LCi cars '07' onwards are notable.

BMW re-intro'd the 'Sport' spec a few years ago. This is quite abit dumbed down from the 'MSport' spec in terms of bodystyling, man a/c, std suspension and so on. I would pick a well spec'd 'SE' over this any day.

I've got the 118d M Sport on a 60 plate.  Economy great... late 50's, ride on 18's is awful, choppy & rock hard on the RFT's.  Great town car & good on motorway also.    Mine goes back soon & I'll most likley end up with another one.

Thanks for the quick replies guys been looking on babybmw.net and the only major problem I can see is the timing chain issue
Apart from that they seem pretty bullet proof
I am going to have to do a lot more reading to find out what models are affected
Cheers

Most vehicles have issues of some sort, these are often highlighted on forums like this, e53 gearbox issues a classic. Not every vehicle suffers from every issue. Service history/record of good maintanace clearly something to look for. 09/10 cars subject to mileage will be approaching the larger of the 2 CB'd services and will only just be out of warranty and hopefully will have been checked over. 5 year inclusive servicing could be one quite a few of the vehicles you come across and worth keeping an eye out for.

After much reading on baby bmw.net and other sites we decided a 1 series diesel was not suitable so went in search of a petrol one but then changed to plan B
This is the result and it is Fun to drive to say the least !!!!! :-0ImageImage
Thanks for the advice given by everyone but it wasn't for us in the end

I like that! i have had a serious fancy for one of them for quite a while & if we needed a second car then thats exactly where the money would go. If fact we discussed whether or not we could get away with one as a family car but i think deep down i knew the answer. Kept getting them as a courtesy car as well, which only made it worse.
Anyway enjoy it and let us know what its like when u get it.

I have to admit to being a little sceptical when tother half went for the Countryman All4 Cooper SD, but now we've got it, it's actually a hoot to drive and recently has been used more than the X6 - it's easier to park in the small spaces we have in our area.

Glad you like yours though..... :D

Did they change the engines in the cooperS in 2007, as the ones on Autotrader state a massive difference in MPG between pre. And post 2007.?
The Cooper S in the photo looks great, and they are supposed to be real fun to drive. My first motor was a 1972 minivan. They've come along way since then, ( thank God )
