Help gearbox problems
Help gearbox problems
Car is working fine in manual mode selects gears fine. When stationary and selecting
From 2-1 in manual mode it clunks really hard. When in auto mode and when trying to accelerate from a start it slips and just revs up without moving forward, then Suddenly it jolts like its found a gear then moves normally then get the gearbox warning up. Gearbox
Goes into limp mode. Error message on gearbox from Inpa is (49 gear symptom check)
Advice please? I am on holiday tomorrow so it's put me on a downer too

Re: Help gearbox problems
I maybe totally off with this one but I was watching the new Wheeler Dealers last week and they had a Porsche Boxster S which had the same symptoms when slipping in first gear in auto mode. "Apparently" all they did was change the gearbox oil and filter and it solved the problem.
Whether this is true and would help in your situation I wouldn't like to say.
But I do hope its something cheap and simple.
Good Luck!

It would certainly be the first thing I would try.

Re: Help gearbox problems
I think now would be a good time to find your local ZF specialist and ask them what they think. A search on that fault code on the web doesn't reveal any good news - only varying amounts of bad.
It could be the solenoid valves, or possibly a torque converter, or oil pump pressure, or the change cleared the crud out and an underlying issue has now become visible. Nothing obvious with only that code though.
I hope it's something easy and cheap.....

well we best not go down that debate, although ive never touched mine and did from 82k-118k in mine so took it over the risky area, no worries about it now though

Re: Help gearbox problems
Didn't you buy the car recently?
Any warranty?
Any warranty?
People buy horsepower but drive torque!
Re: Help gearbox problems
Private sale. No warranty
I have another form of warranty cover but will only pay up to £500 for any claim. Not sure if it will
Cover this issue though.
Please keep any advice coming. I am off on holiday but will check when I am back.
Thanks again everyone

Re: Help gearbox problems
Absolute worst case - and this is the WORST case, you're looking at between £1,500 and £2,200 to have a box completely rebuilt, a large chunk of which is just the labour (17.5 hours) getting the box out, rebuilding and putting it in again. Parts were about £800 for a destroyed box - which you have not got.
Mine lost all drive when the TC failed, oil pump jammed causing a catastrophic pressure drop and that was the end of that!! No warning at all, or even a light coming on >:(

Re: Help gearbox problems
This sounds very similar to the problem i had with a previous BMW, about 5 weeks after a full gearbox oil and filter change i too had no drive in automatic and it turned out to be the mechanic had used the wrong oil. He thought he was doing me a favour by saving me money on the BMW recommended oil and using normal ATF. Low and behold it damaged the valve body beyond repair, I ended up coming to an agreement with him where he payed halves on a second hand box and fitted it for free, he also picked up the cost of a new oil filter and oil from BMW and did the oil and filter change once the gearbox was fitted for free. Don't know if this helps.
