Retrofitting rear view mirror with universal remote and compass

Post by MrMaloo » Sat Feb 23, 2013 6:51 pm

Hi

Seen a new one on ebay and just wondering if anyone has tried this. Is it a straightforward swap?

Any info appreciated

Thanks

Jon

I had the universal remote on a previous X5 and mentioned to a garage door salesman who felt their could be issues with the remote being compatible with the frequencies used in the UK. Maybe worth confirming before going to the hassle, expense first.

No there's not. It's just a PITA to program to rolling coded gates/doors

Have one remote for gates and another for the garage so i figure it would certainly neaten things up....plus i must admit i like the idea of led compass display. Certainly gimmicky but i'm a sucker for an OEM gadget i'm afraid.

Never had the remote function, but the mirror compass is actually useful......in a geeky way.  Have it on the X6 and Mini.

If the remote uses the 'Homelink' system then that should be OK in the UK.  The ones not to get are the older 418MHz versions if using radio.

Have done some net searching and found a really good looking 'how to' on another website (am i allowed to link to it?). Will try and get the one on ebay and hope for the best.

I also like the directional compass in the mirror - it seems like a silly option and it was actually a cheap option on new ca rs - I think it was only £75 as an option from new.  The 4.8is came with it and many other "options" as standard and I must admit I rather like it. The 4.8 spec certainly spoils you when you come to change cars!!
I actually do find the compass useful at times, especially when the traffic reports start talking about westbound this and southbound that!!!!

I've got a 4.8is and it doesn't have the compass. It's a £60 extra according to the forums spec list....autodimming mirrors for £220 on top. Add universal remote and thats almost £500 worth of rear view mirror lol

I've been thinking about doing the same but still unsure about the remote for use with my garage door. As above though it wasn't standard on the 4.8is as again mine doesn't have it.

I didn't realise there were poverty spec 4.8is around, LOL.  I think perhaps many original owners just ticked loads of boxes and the compass mirror was such a cheap option.  I did read somewhere that the 4.8 had numerous options as standard though. One of the boxes ticked on mine which I will always be grateful for, over and above the compass, is the Webasto aux heater.

I get carried away when it comes to ticking the boxes, but the compass in the mirror never even made it on to the 'maybe' list.  The Sat Nav gives me enough information.

Its all about the universal remote for me! Compass is an added extra bonus. Now if only i could find a use for the third button....muting the girlfriend, ejector seat, the list continues. Suggestions on a postcard..... ;)

compass mirror is probably a big deal in teh US, where all interstates are north to south or east to west..

i've had a few rentals with the direction prominently displayed, some analogue on the mirror as well!
