Auc Heating - Help?!?!?

Post by jonamv8 » Tue Nov 02, 2010 3:05 pm

I have auxiliary heating function on my 54 X5 that comes with the keyfob with the on and off buttons. Given the recent drop off in outside temperatures I have started to play with it in an effort to get it working.

I was under the impression that I could wake up in the morning and 15/20 minutes before I was heading out in the car, I could hit the ON button and that car would start to heat itself via the auxiliary heating motor. Been trying for a few days and I swear it’s doing nothing to the interior temperature of the car.

Image

If I select Aux Heating from the on board computer I am taken to a screen with a Timer 1 and Timer 2 option which I can activate and set independent times for. The two options below are Aux Heating and Aux Vent which as you can see in the image are greyed out and I cannot select them to activate them. What I have noticed is that if I click the ON button on my fob and then get into the vehicle 10 minutes later for example I am able to tick Aux Heating or Aux Vent but surely by that time it’s too late, I’m in the car and just put the actual heaters on.

Does anyone know where I am going wrong? Is aux heating not what I described above for pre-warming the car in the winter? Have I got a fault?
Any help would be duly appreciated.

I can't comment on the oem setup as i don't have it (i have a modded version) but as for the aux heater ...yes it should warm up the cabin a little but don't go expecting it to be like toast as it won't be (at least mine isn't anyway).
You will need it on longer than 15 mins aswell as it takes awhile to get going.
I tested mine out the other day with it getting a little sharper in the mornings now :) and ran it for about 35-40 mins and it cleared the frosted screen no probs but the cabin wasn'r warm as such but did have the edge taken off it and was defo better than not using the heater :)
Perhaps others can comment re the warmth of the cabin area but mine works great as a defroster on the windows but you wouldn't want to be wearing your bemuda's in the cabin if you know what i mean
Still great mod mind and very handy on those cold mornings.

Auc Heating - Help?!?!?

Post by ITBarbie » Tue Nov 02, 2010 11:36 pm

Hi

I've got the OEM webasto aux heater and it's the business as I set it for approximately 20 mins and it's lovely and warm. My only complaint is it's doesn't heat the steering wheel and seats I have to do that. I know what a shame.

Re your issues my experience was the same re greyed out menu and I tried loads of ways but alas nothing worked. Can I ask when you press the remote do you get the slow flashing green light show up on remote or does it do something else? I tried changing battery and even reprogramming it with the car but nothing. In the end I took it in and found out it was knackered and had the unit replaced under AUC warranty. The dealer put in an invoice for approx £600 iirc. I sincerely hope you get it working and mine was just bad luck.

Also call a local Webasto rep like I did as he gave me some good tips. Make sure you have over a quarter of a tanks worth of fuel and the outside temp I think is anything less that 6c if I remember before it will kick in.

Good luck

Penny

Sorry for the :hijacked:
I have a 2006 3.0 diesel with Webasto under the bonnet but no remote control.
When i open the menu pictured above i have the 2 timers & aux ventilation but no mention of heating!
I have noticed that when i unlock the doors something fires up under the bonnet.
Does this mean my heater only starts up when i'm just about to get into the car? If so what a useless extra (i know it was standard on the diesel) to fit to a car.
Only reason i want this verified is i may consider doing the Maplin relay mod.
Thanks in advance,
Martyn.

Auc Heating - Help?!?!?

Post by ITBarbie » Wed Nov 03, 2010 8:44 am

Hi

To my mind that means you don't have the heat option as you should see it on the Nav screen. Eg mine says Aux heating/ vent.

As for the whir when you unlock the car as far as I'm concerned this happens with or without the aux heater option but I will invite someone else to go definitive on this!

i dont know what the noise could be when you open the doors, vent fans possibly? but if the menu screen doesnt say "aux heat" and you dont have a remote fob then you havent got the pre heating option, but it can be enabled by a cheap remote control kit from maplins and a bit of diy wiring. or alternatively, i hear that jason, the resident mechanic, can program your car to enable the on screen menu to allow "aux heat" with the timers.
there are write ups on this subject on the forum, just have a search and read around..

The webasto isn't to heat the cabin area...that was an after thought by bmw (to charge extra  ) AFAIK it is fitted to pre heat the oil in the diesel models as the oil is much thicker/heavier than that of the petrol versions.Hence why all diesels have the webasto and most petrol models don't only those who added it as an optional extra.
As fenj66 said if you don't have a remote and it only says auv vent you don't have it.Aux vent can be programed to come on just the same but will only blow cold air into the cabin. HTH

Hi Mitch

I know I'm dim but are you saying it does not heat the cabin area as mine does ?

Brilliant advice guys - can't thank you enough.
You would think i'd have learnt by now not to believe ANY salesmen (even BMW ones!).
My dealer is in for a stroppy phonecall & i may even go down the mis-selling route here. This is the 2nd option that i had described to me that it now appears my car doesn't have (the 1st being an aux socket for i-pod).
I'll see what they offer me but at least i know by the fantastic writeups on here i can get heater working anyway!
Thanks again,
Martyn.

There is an aux socket which you can use for playing an MP3 player - its in the rear console next to the ashtray. Mono output as I recall, so not great, but it is there, nonetheless.......

I'm still trying to work out how the Aux heater derives its fuel supply from a petrol car......my 4.8 has one and it works quite nicely.....

Condor - can i pick your brain on that one? Dealer told me that was summat to do with the TV module, i can't get an i-pod to play at all through this socket. How did you get yours to do it? Thanks again for any advice.
I'm beginning to feel like a numpty here!
Cheers,
Martyn.

Although having the obc reprogrammed to start the heater, this is only going to help if you always know before hand when you will want to start the car - I would advise using my original remote method at the top of this thread!

Incidentally, it's easy to add an mp3 connector off the back of the radio unit ( just need a 3.5mm socket and some wire) you don't need the BMW kit. Even if you can get a signal from the socket at the rear of the centre console (and I have never managed it) it will only be mono. I'll try and find my old write up for the mp3 socket

Martyn, I don't use it ever, but messed about with it just to see what it was all about - I connected the ipod to the aux input and selected av on the tv module and it played through the speakers, mono like I said so not great but it did work.

I think i remember Sanj saying that different leads have different results as he tried a couple that looked the same but one worked and the other didn't....also the sound will be in mono as others have said.
