Newbie with X6 (plus initial review)

Hi All,

Have been lurking here for a while but thought I'd introduce myself.  I picked up my Approved Used X6 xdrive40d (LCI) last week from Sytner Nottingham and absolutely love it.  Spec is:

- Midnight blue - an interesting LCI colour which can appear more green or blue dependent on lighting.  Really like it.
- Oyster Nevada leather (black carpets thank God)
- Media Package
- Dynamic package
- 336 20inch alloys
- Reverse/top view camera
- BMW apps interface
- Internet
- Folding mirrors
- Rear third seat
- Running boards
- Telephone USB audio interface
- Front seat heating
- 5yr service package
- High Beam assist
- Sun Protection glass

My car history is long and varied and I appear to have an inability to keep cars for more than a year or two!  My most recent was an Audi A5 Sportback Quattro but I've had a number of BMWs in the past and they have been, by far, my favourites.  Previous Bimmers include an E36 328i, E46 330d, E83 X3 2.0d followed by a 3.0d, E91 335d and an E70 3.0d SE a couple of years ago.

Initial findings of the car:

Handling is quite superb.  Took the car up to Argyll to see my folks and had some fun on the roads I know well (A83) - this car isn't just 'good for a 4x4', it's good, full stop.  Massively impressed.

Ride can be a bit bouncy on poorer surfaces but I was expecting that - certainly much better than my E83s.  Otherwise, an extremely comfortable place to be.

Performance is great.  I remember the step down from my 335d to the X5 was quite disappointing so to be back again in a car with prodigious overtaking ability is really very nice.

Pleased with economy.  Having read some threads here before I picked up the car, I was getting a bit nervous that I would have difficulty breaking high 20's/30mpg - no such worry.  In the short time I've had it, I've been very reassured that reasonable economy is perfectly feasible.  Bearing in mind i have always seen about a 10% drop in economy in my diesel cars during winter, I was very satisfied with the 34mpg I achieved from Glasgow to Manchester yesterday - drove all the way down at a steady 70mph.  So with a few more miles on the clock (only done 4500 so far and still feels very tight) and summer temps/fuel - I'm absolutely certain I'll be seeing high 30's in due course.
Driven hard on the A83 saw no less than 25mpg.  The small amount of town driving I've done in South Manchester/Cheshire has seen an easy 27-28mpg - very happy with that as I was getting 23mpg, at best, with similar driving in my E70.

Sorry for the lengthy intro.  I'm looking forward to getting settled here - seems such a friendly forum!  :)

Here are a few pics.  Ignore the '40' balloons on the car - they were for, erm, someone else.  ;)Image

Welcome and very nice the car looks too.  We'll have to let you off about not picking the 'man pink' version though... :P

No doubt the 'squares' will be along soon about wheelbarrow handles and exhausts......they're just jealous. >:D

Hi Huck, thanks for the full introduction.  Your car looks fantastic.  Don't knock the balloons, they maybe the reason for such good mileage.  :))

I've had my X6 for three months now and with 6k under the right foot I'm loving it.  May you too have as much enjoyment from a superb car.  ;)

Welcome. I also moved from an Audi A5 Sportback Quattro but to an X5. Considered an X6 but needed more room in the back.

Looks great!  There's plenty on here in your age group, and some a jump or two up like PVR and X5Sport.  :))

Never heard of that paint colour - must be unique to the X6 as don't recall seeing when I was speccing my X5. Stunning colour.

Lovely motor mate  :camera:

I'd love an X6 like yours (but a white one). But my fears about running costs keep stopping me taking the plunge. As its not just the low mpg figures, but also the cost of renewing those massive tyres.

Tyres are costly enough on my 635d, and those on the X6 are even bigger..

Hi and welcome Pope, (are you hopeful of taking up the new post a the Vatican?)  ;)

Running costs won't be that far off the 635d, depending on your driving style, low 30s are achievable from a gallon of your finest diesel.  Not as much as your car, but maybe not as bad as you believe.

Feel free to ask questions to see just what the real running cost are.

...and there's always tyre insurance.  When I bought my X5, I think I paid just shy of £400 to cover up to 5 tyres in 3 years.  Doesn't cover wear and tear (punctures only) and pays up to £300 per tyre (which should more or less cover the full cost).

Yep, I decided not to go for tyre insurance - having not had any punctures for years.  What happens, two in the first 18 months.  £600 thank you very much ...

Thanks all for the welcome!

Running costs shouldn't be a million miles of a 635d I would've thought. Yes, the tyres are humongous and I certainly won't like the sting when the time comes; I weighed it all up and thought it's definitely worth it!

Absolutely loving the car - such a feel good factor when I'm in it.
