Hello and Question from a Newbie - E70 3.0d or 4.0d M sport??

Hi Guys!

Newbie to the site but a regular on pistonheads and all the other owners forums for my previous cars (Mx5, S2000, 987 Boxster S).

It's come to the point in my life where i'm having to head towards a grown up car due to family car share etc (yawn, yawn). I've got about £43k to spend on a decent steed which will last us for the next 5 years of (hopefully) having kids, getting a dog and so on.

Porsche have been fairly useless with what they are willing to offer on my Boxster deal and basically will only offer a new Cayenne diesel for over £60k which i'm not willing to do as don't want a finance deal! Also looked at an Evoque but it's too small, economy is crap for an engine that size and there's not enough oomph!

I tested a X5 4.0d M sport yesterday and must say i loved it. Fully loaded it will be all my budget and some for a 2012 model on sub 10k mileage.

Alternatively i could go for a 3.0d and remap if this will bring similar performance? Having said that a remap on the twin turbo'd 4.0 would also be interesting.

Any suggestions/help would be good.

Am i mad buying a newish one? Should i go for the 3.0d and use the change on an elise? Answers on a post card! :)

Chris

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You should find a wealth of good advice on here......along with some odd sense of humour being expressed, but you'll find it's a great place for info.

Personally and as you have a budget to play with, I would go with the 40d route.  Same engine after all and it's not hugely different economy wise from the single turbo version, but the extra 'kick' from more than 300bhp in torque terms is worth it.  The 8-speed box is a must so make sure you get a mid-2010 build onwards if you go down the 30d route.  I think all 40d versions are 8-sp.

Remaps of around 360bhp are possible and the transmission can cope with 700nm of torque.

Having worked my way through 330d 535d X6 40d and now X6 M50d I would say go for the 40d as it is a keeper and you would not need to mess around remapping and chancing your warranty.

Welcome.

Sounds like you'll be always wanting that 40d.

However, if it were me, I would have to go test drive the 30d just to sure. I know it won't be a mapped one but just to see what its like. But that's just me.

Enjoy whichever you buy.

Only me !

To the OP :

With a list of past hairdressing cars like that surely the upgrade is to an Abarth convertible surely as that has back seats. PVR will be along soon once he has finished touching up some old bird whilst giving her a blue rinse. He pretends to be manly by having a Z4M also but we all know it is 1.3 with 4 exhausts from Halfords.

In answer to your question..............

........I would also definitely go for the twin turbo on account of the smoother/stronger power delivery and the need not to worry about invalidating your warranty with a remap. Remaps can now be located easily by dealers and given that you are looking for a new(ish) car I assume it will have a warranty which you don't want to risk

I agree that the 40d is the one to go for with the 8 speed as opposed to the 3.0sd or 35d (same car different branding)

Have you driven the latest Cayenne though. I had the V8 one for a few days and in my eyes it is far superior to the X5.

To prove you haven't completely lost your life (kids/dogs) you will need to find some money for an Elise too (but then I would say that - check out my sig)

Good luck and keep us posted

:hi: & hi.

I have in the past had an E53 pre facelift, with 186bhp and then the post facelift with 218bhp ( I think ). Both felt fast enough, however after being away from the Xs for a few years I tried an E70 3.0d and to be honest felt disappointed in the lack of urge.  Settled on the E71 40d and loving it.  I personally would regretted getting a 3 litre single turbo.

Welcome to the forum!  Can't go wrong with the 40d - it's a brilliant car and the acceleration and handling is phenomenal for such a heavy car. You should also bear in mind that the 40d comes with bigger brakes than the 30d for better stopping power ...

Thanks for all the replies guys and happy to take the ribbing about my previous cars!  :D got one more euro trip left in the 987 this year plus I get to test lots of different cars over the year so I'm happy with the X5 being my everyday/only car!  ;)

The 4.0 is certainly my weapon of choice, only thing that's annoyed me a bit today is the £2k Adrian Flux have quoted me for insurance! Can anyone suggest trying another insurer?

Or are you the Stig or something?!?

I'm paying 10% less than that on my M50d and thought I was getting ripped off by BMW Insurance for that premium too.

Unless you are 22, have 11 points and a previous disqual, or live in Moss Side, I'd try one of the comparison websites.

Near Chigwell in Essex/East London.

Problem might be I was on fleet insurance and only have 1 years claims free? When I asked why it was so expensive the lady said underwriters were not keen on 4x4s and especially X5's as they were getting lots of claims on them .....think that's BS to be honest!

Worth trying anyone else besides Flux?
