Probably just very lucky, but from the call to arrival of the breakdown guy took around 15-20 minutes!! I'd been out and about in the X in the morning and been home an hour or so, packed it ready for a long journey tomorrow and changed a rear light bulb - decided to start it to check brake lights etc - and it just wouldn't start, starter kept turning over and over and over with key in ignition till I switched it off. Left it awhile tried again, same stuff. Thought OMG, I've got another car I can use but its stuck behind this one, what now??
Phoned BMW Emergency as its an AUC with full cover, they were very helpful - previous experience with RAC was always waits of hours and hours, so I was amazed when the recovery guy tapped on my window about 20 minutes later - took a can of stuff he blasted into the air intake manifold and its fine now, apparently it was flooded - I hadn't put my foot on the accelerator so HTH did that happen? No error messages no problems - it flies on the road like a rocket. Just all of a sudden. I was a bit panicky but its fine now and
for BMW Emergency service.

Had to use them once myself when my then new X5 was about three weeks old and I got a Check Control message that would not clear, telling me I had no oil pressure even though the oil level was fine. The Dealer told me to call them out. Took less than 40mins before this real nice guy turned up in a 530d estate crammed with hardware & diagnostic kit. He found that it was only the sensor that had failed, but he still went and got a replacement from a dealer and sorted it all out in just over 90 mins. I was very impressed as he could not do enough to help.

My 4.8is which at the time was also an AUC suffered the same problem earlier this year. The car would not start after being parked on the drive for 20 minutes after a 100 mile journey…….. Just kept turning over and over…..I had no warnings either that anything was amiss……
The emergency call out was answered within 30 minutes but mine was taken to the local BMW dealer on the back of the breakdown truck.
They diagnosed a defective battery which was replaced under the BMW warranty…….Touch wood I have not experienced problems since….
If you search on Outpost this problem has been experienced by other 4.8/4.6iS drivers particularly in cold weather…….I did post my experiences on the old X5 drivers web site but I also posted on Outpost as well……….One of their most prolific posters refers to a known problem with the fuel injectors and to which refers to a now deleted service bulletin.

I went back to my local dealer but they could not find any reference to it.
Oh well……….A very big thumbs up to the AUC warranty………….

Hi
Another thumbs up for me. The spare and main key got left in the boot (long story). They came within 30 mins and he got in the car within 10 mins with no damage whatsoever. Very happy. It was the day before the AUC ran out as well

Just an update on the starting issue - touch wood the car was flawless before and has been since....here's hoping. The recovery chap had a can of that quickstart stuff which he blasted into the air intake just beyond the air filter while the car was busy cranking itself crazy - the stuff he blasted into the inlet seemed to clear it - there was a smell of petrol come to think of it, when it first happened - and then it just took ,and ran perfectly. So could be the fuel injector issue with the V8s? Its a bit random though - the recovery guy said it was "flooded" like an oldstyle carb flooding and he'd seen similar before which is why he tried the intake manifold trick. He did bring a big flatbed with him though!!! And I certainly never went near the accelerator pedal when starting - it wasn't really cold outside, more like about 10 degrees, and the battery seems fine although I'm suspicious about the FSR- the chirring noise after switching off is there, and its on my list for the dealer to look at when it has a few bits done. There were no error messages with the starting issue either. I hate random weird faults, makes me uneasy as to when they may recur. Mind you, BMW Emergency does seem to be quick off the mark, so that;s reassuring. I'll renew the AUC warranty next year I think........

I've had plenty of problems with my BMs. My 530d, my M5 and now my 4.8is, but BMW assistance have been superb in all circumstances. Just the dealers themselves need to buck up their ideas sometimes.
