Which laptop?

Right guys 2 questions .......
I am after a second laptop.  I purely require it for general Internet browsing. (I don't download music/films etc from it.)
Which laptop would be suitable for me at budget price?

The wife's laptop is 3 yrs old.  When you turn it on it makes a loud continuous audible beeping noise?  Any suggestions?  It stops after about 20 seconds and works ok.  Until the page decides to scroll to the bottom of the screen and then I'm unable to get it back to the top.  :-(
Most annoying.

Anyone got any ideas as to what could be wrong and a guess as to how much to repair??

Thanks. :-)

Something like a Chromebook from one of the mainstream manufacturers would probably do you in that case.  Nothing fancy, no great performance, fine for browsing and relatively cheap from about £200 upwards.

Could be anything from the hard drive not spinning up quickly, or a motherboard issue causing a slow boot up check.  If it's not showing an error on screen it's harder to pin down.

If all that you are doing is browsing and do not require any computing power then have a look at a tablet.  It doesn't have to be an iPad but perhaps something like a kindle fire with am android OS could be good.

Pros
Pick up and browse capability
Apps
Portability

Cons
Vey little processing power
No work applications like MS Office
No keyboard but full QWERTY pods up on the screen

I wouldn't be without a tablet now even though I have a notebook as well.

I've struggled with a couple of laptops over the last couple of years, solely for browsing the net, and wasting my evenings on here :)
I've just got an IPad 4 with a SIM card, it's miles quicker than any laptop I've had for browsing, instant access to the net, can be used away from wifi access, I'm well pleased with it. Battery life is amazing too.
I would highly recommend the Ipad
I pad minis are only £260 too

I agree with Peter. Whilst I still have a laptop, I only use it when I need the full functionality of MS Office else I just use the iPad 2 with a Zagg Folio keyboard/case (if I were buying a keyboard for the ipad now, I'd probably consider the Brydge).
