Would not have thought that the market would be big enough for that ...

That looks very close, even too close to the X6. A 240hp 2 litre diesel could be interesting in what will be a lighter car so plenty of poke and an economy in the 50s?

X7(X8)? Can't see that, BMW have looked at an X7 over the years but dismissed.  The Merc GL really hasn't worked in the UK, not sure else where what sales have been like but given the size of the new X5, an X7 would just be too big IMO.

If I remeber correctly, BMW decided to make the X5 available as a 7-seater by enlarging it so removing any need for the 'X7'.  They then increased the size of the X3 to bring it nearer that of the E53.

Press reports intimate that the X4 will be pitched at the 'Evoque' buyer market, and let's face it no one thought the X6 would sell but it has been very successful.

X7 would have a market in the US where people like larger vehicles. Even in the states people are looking for fuel efficient vehicles and in SUV class there aren't many available to offer the efficiency with lots of room. If bmw comes out with the engine options available in europe and make it available in the states than X7 would have the market. Than again these guys think globally so. Lets see how the new X5 and brand new X4 will do in the market. I think fuel efficiency is the key in these days.

my initial thought was 'that's too many x models by bmw in the market now'.. but then it looks nice, although nothing beats teh x6 to me in looks,. that's probably intentional by bmw..

plus the clever bit about reusing X3 components probably makes it a no brainer to bring another model out at not so much additional cost as redeveloping from scratch and increase market share..

other articles talk about the 'evoque' factor which prompted them to do this..

What are the chances of a three door X4?........limited, but as the Evoque has proved, there is a desire for such a concept.

Any thing is available as a conversion. I was in Oxford airport this week and there was a Ferrari shoting brake (estate). I'm not really a Ferrari fan but did like this with its four seats and degree of practicality.

Really? I really don't like the two or three door concept in general, can't picture X6 or any other 4x4 in that concept. I prefer every passenger get in and out from their designated door. :)

guess we're too old for that concept  8)  - its designed for those who only need 2 doors and 2 seats..

in my case 4 doors and 4 seats are hardly sufficient!

That's probably the reason for the rash of four door coupes out there these days.  I do like the new 6 Series Grand Coupe.
