Hi guys and girls, am I being over cautious by not giving out my cars registration and VIN number to someone on email. I have explained that I would rather they view the car first then HPI her as I dont want to give out any details to a stranger.

Personally I agree with you. You can never be too sure. I would really have to be confident to give that info out but saying that people can get it if they really wants it regardless

A reg is a reg, there isnt anything to be secretive about it? Although i do agree with you. I normally run a hpi after iv seen the car and i know i want to buy it.
VIN is another matter though

If genuine potential buyer concerned re integrity of car you offer in event of printout provided of negative HPI hit you will refund the cost of the check.
An HPI with reg alone will confirm integrity of the car but buyer would need full VIN & V5C numbers to be able to activate HPI guarantee.
If just after peace of mind after having checked the plate maybe provide the last 3 of VIN & V5C doc number & with agreement you will provide numbers to be checked on viewing & asking for prior to payment in full.
Of course if someone wants to clone your car or any other X5 they can do so by walking past, noting the number in the windscreen etc etc
Hope that makes sense.

PeterL, presume the guy hasn't come to see the car yet?
if not, i can't imagine anybody in teh right mind deciding the first thing to do is to spend money and do an HPI!!
after seeing the car, after having a conversation with you is a different thing..
that suggests me that this can'be be a genuine buyer.
so regardless of the risk being high or low, i wouldn't go freely distributing reg + VIN to that sort of ppl..

I've always gave the details out, nothing has come back to me - I mean a reg can be seen from the road... A vin can be read from the windscreen?!?!?
If someone clones the car you'll have evidence that it wasn't you in places caught etc etcetc but I don't think criminals are that stupid...

i always hpi a car before setting off to view, its only £3 and the last thing you want to do is drive a distance only to find it isnt hpi clear, i would give him the reg, he can hpi then he can get the vin if purchasing and activate his guarentee whilst you be the good seller and put the kettle on

i agree with Shadrack, i would not travel unless i had the checks done prior, if your buyer is having to travel i would give him the details and you will have his details if anything was to happen

I emailed some of the other sellers and we have all had the same email so I have decided its a cam of some sort. Can't figure out what the scam is though.
