Panoramic sunroof on a 4.8is

Post by lynxjock » Thu Jan 24, 2013 1:51 pm

Hi All,
just bought the car, my 2nd one, so knew everything to thoroughly check this time, now the sunroof works perfectly on this car, but the inner cover of the glass roof coloured and in 2 parts which you can control with the switch to open and close, the rear part is missing totally ?? very strange, anyone stripped one of these down ? is it just buy the rear section and clip in ?? as usual any advice greatly appreciated.

ps i hope i explained this good enough lol

Are you talking about the inner 'sun blind' cover that you close and sits in the headlining?

If so then you have parts missing as per this diagram.  It might also be that the rear blind has come off the tracks/drive motor?    Looking at the drawings I suspect it's a bit more than a 'clip in' job as the whole thing may need disassembly to connect it all up to the drive motors etc.

Sounds a bit like the system has failed and the cost of replacement was beyond the means of the Owner at the time.  I think BMW were pricing the 'cassette' that it all comes in at about £1,800 plus labour.

All the pano roof diagrams and parts are here.

hi yes the inner sun blind, it is in 2 parts and the rear section is missing, the whole sunroof works perfectly and using the switch I can electrically move the front sun blind as it should, there are clips to the rear of the front part to attach the rear section. I dont think its broken at all its just missing the rear section.

yes suspended head liner rear is missing

I know its a stupid thought but if it had been retracted all the way back its not stuck at rear of headlining is it?

I am not sure how you'd check apart from poss gently dropping the rear headling where it meets the boot hatch

Hi Guys,

Firstly apologies for reactivating an old thread but since I have the same problem wanted to know if you managed to sort it, I just bought an 05 3.0D X5 and when I first got it I forgot to check the pano roof, anyhow after getting it home from the dealer I noticed that the sunshade wasn't completely closed and it wouldn't completely retract I had to keep pressing the button, it then managed to open enough to go past the rear section of the sunshade and now it won't close to I am assuming it has got stuck in the roof liner or got loose somehow. Is there an easy way to fix this? Is removing the headliner a big job?

Thanks in advance.

When you say you've just bought it, did you get any kind of warranty with it?

They offered a warranty at an additional cost and I declined, not sure if that was a good idea or not...

update to this though since posting it this morning I took the car my friend who is a mechanic and indeed the rear section of the sunshade was just stuck in the liner as the metal vent piece had came loose from it on one side so when trying to close the sunshade it wouldn't pull it. He said the plastic bracket is broken on that side that helps pull them both together and if can get replacement and can remove the glass shouldn't be too hard to fix, or alternatively he mentioned he could glue it and leave it for a couple of days before using it again??

What are your thoughts guys?

Common problem.  There is an on line fix that shows you how to disable the rear section.  I think getting parts is tricky as the normal practice is to replace the entire cassette at about £2k. :(
