This will depend a lot on the width of the wheels, depth of tread and pattern of tread.  Ie a performance tread will have the poorest traction, where as a M&S pattern will give you more traction.  If your tread depth is low, 3mm or less, then regardless of tread pattern traction could be an issue.  At the end of the day, you have four wheel drive that will help a lot, but your real enemy in snow and ice is the brakes.  Stay off them and plan well ahead.

And you can always engage 'snow' mode too.  Single press of the DSC button.  Part disables it and is good for tricky conditions.  You should get the caption 'Traction' appear in the central info display.

If you press and hold the button then everything gets turned off.......not a good idea!

thanks for the tips; like i say, i've not had a x5 in the snow before.  had my wheels off the other day and cleaned them up "behind the ears" and did check the tread/pressure.  the front have 5 and the rears have 6mm.   they are all Bridgestone, but not M&S.

amazes me how many cars run about with like 2mm or less tread!  dunno about you, but in my car i carry my wife, 2 young children.  nothing more precious; no way would i drive with anything less than 3mm.  1.6 ........... yeah right, never on my vehicles!

False economy anyway as you might as well benefit from the new tyres rather than the next owner when you trade the car in.

I've been ready for just over a week so looking forward to the snow now. Well actually the X has performed superbly over the last couple of years with summer tyres in the winter months.

And Shez, I'll happily give you a tow if needed....  :)

No snow around here yet. Even it snows my work is 1 mile away so i should be just ok. On the other hand i have to go to the post office to ship the xenons to Raj so an extra half a mile might be tricky... :)
