When changing my battery, I had to remove a round black "box" with some cables in. I didn`t acctually removed it, I just flipped it around to be able to lift the battery out.

What is inside this "box" O:-)

Thats the air compressor for the rear suspension

Aha - then I have airsuspension........

I do not have switch on the left side of the steeringwheel (lefthand drive), and I tought untill now that I didn`t have air suspension.

Is it 2 types of airsuspension? Full, and only on the rear?

I do have 2 height sensors on the rear suspension, one on each side.

Air standard on X5, no switch

Air is standard on the rear of the X5 if a 'Sport' or full 'air' on the V8 type car I believe.  Non-'sport' trim 3.0/3.0D cars have conventional springs unless air was added as an option at new.

- Compresor above the battery
- Sensors at each side on the rear suspension
- One sensor on right side on the front suspensin

What i do not have;

- Switch on the left hand side off the stering wheel. BUT, i have a Webasto control unit on the left side of the steering wheel. Could it be that a smartass have replaced the airsusp switch with the webo unit?

Have never heard the compressor work. Wher is the sphare located?

You have rear self levelling (air suspension on the rear only) suspension. No switch in the cabin (as that is only if you fave full front/rear air suspension). You will have standard front suspension setup. You will see the rear airbags if you look through your wheels or under the rear of your X5.

Inside the black metal dome unit sits the compressor which is surrounded by a sound deadening material. You will not really hear it from inside the cabin area as it runs very quietly inside the dome.

Raj - your right  That`s the verison I have.

So, the self leveling doesnt work, or at least it indactes that it doesent. Then it`s no doubt that the rear suspension is to hard. So, what can make the system pump to much air into the airbags?

The car have not been used the last 6 days, and still the same height so there is most likeley no leak.

Your spare wheel should be in the space between the compressor dome and the floor......if that is what you were also asking?

I may well be working and yes may not be any leaks but until you get the computer on it to see what error codes, etc are coming up you will not really know. It may just be a sensor failing.

As you will have probably guessed from my post I thot all X5s were air suspension. I am therefore confused why certain threads go into great length on sourcing and fitting non air parts when they must be more easily accessinle!?

guess because rubber perishes over time and eventually the air bags start leaking  ??? some of these cars are a decade old now.. !

The air suspension on the E53 is very temperamental tbh and components constantly fail, including the airbags themselves, so as with myself, I decided to remove the air suspension completely to negate the constant fear of the 'self-level susp.inact' message.

This is what I mean - replacing air suspension is mentioned on forum as a new alternative. If there are X5s that are standard non air then surely it is a fairly easy change over with easily accessible parts!?

The rear air replacement is very easy as its just rear springs with the lower and upper perches and pull out the relay/fuse/code out the error warning from the dash.
