Hi guys, happy new year to all.
Just completed my long drive back to London from the grim north yesterday and had a slightly weird experience with the X5 that i've not had before.
Car ran absolutely flawlessly for the entire trip (3.5 hours), then i parked up for 5 mins to grab a pint of milk. When i started again, i put the car into reverse to get out of the parking space (mine is the manual E53 3.0D 56 plate) and there was a small clunk and the car felt a little resistance/whir when slowly reversing. Then i put it into 1st, went forwards and the same 'resistance'. Not much, but it didn't feel quite right. It seemed to clear istelf pretty soon thereafter and is back to normal now.
Any idea what this could be?
Wasn't sure if it was a 4wd diff thing, or maybe gearbox? Something due to the heat of a 250 mile journey? Car has only done 63k, and has always felt like new so far.

Re: Clunk Query
'Sticky' hand brake perhaps? Being it's a manual there can't be much else in the transmission other than the xdrive itself.
As long as it's cleared then it could just have been heat related - something like brake shoes on a hot drum that cooled just a little and made them reluctant to release when the brake was released again?

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

I think you could be right, I will investigate further!
I haven't heard of any particular issues with the xdrive itself on the E53, so fingers crossed its nothing to do with that
