Fuel Economy Under Reading in a Positive Way

Currently raking up the miles in the X6 with some 2500 done in just over five weeks.  :'( So needless to say I'm visiting the pumps on a regular basis.  I do like to see how the economy fairs and from past experience have found on board computers to over estimate the mpg.

So for the last three fill ups, I've compared the vehicles readout to my own calculations.  And am pleased to report that the car is under reading by about 1 mpg.  Not a lot I know, but at least it gives me the confidence to rely on the OBC knowing that the reading is on the low side.  8)

Hi don

That's the good news but I'm interested as to what consumption are you getting out of your X6  in comparison to my petrol one as considering buying brother in laws X6 of him and thats a 35d version

35d is alleged to be about 10% heavier on fuel than the 40d......so I would assume 27-28mpg as I'm getting 29-31 overall.  That is with only 9,200 on the clock after two years though.... :-[

I haven't done a 'long term' figure as the car doesn't have the two computers that the E53 came with - one if which only got reset every 3,000 miles.

Hi Graeme,

Well the last three tanks have returned between 34 - 31 (adjusted figures) over approximently 400 for each tank.  (I tend to fill up with around a quarter of a tank left).  The better mpg comes from me doing mostly A roads to and from work.  The lower figure includes shorter journeys with more town/city driving.  As a rule I tend to get about 20% below official combined figures overall and my total combined figure is 30 mpg over 2500 miles shows that the trend is continuing.

I have the eight speed gear box with a combined figure of 37.7.  With the six speed model that has a combined figure of 34 I would expect to see around 27 mpg for me.  Do you know what would be you normal return compared to published figures, this may help you estimate you expected return?

I will probably have done that much within six months of owning the car.  :'(

The wife's starting a new job in February that includes a company car so until then the X6 is doing all the running around.  Hopefully calm down once the new car arrives.  :-[
