Right you'll have to forgive my ignorance here ........... but WHY ???

Whats the advantages, any disadvages? Whats the cost? Is there a huge difference in fuel consumption (for a 4.4 V8 in particular?) What about bhp; is there a great increase? Torque/0-60 any quicker?

I'm sure lots of people here are going to be a great help and convinence me I want my X5 done.........

Advantages are better fuel consumption (only 1-2mpg but better than nothing), smoother power delivery and more torque/bhp (about 10ish bhp on a normally aspirated engine).

Can't really think of any real disadvantages, but I know some will say it causes more stress on internals, etc but it really is negligible if done by someone properly and may effect warranty if you have any and they know/find out.

Nope not with a remap. Normally done through the OBD port.

Get in touch with Jason(I think he's a forum supporter) he's the dogs b******s regarding a re-map I'm going to have mine done by him pity I'm in Blackpool as I'd rather him do it personally.

You can - he'll send you his remapping consoleand you can download your file, send it to him, HE applies the new map to your file and then sends it back to you for upload to the car.

Think I'm going to get Jason to do mine in the new year as well. My only concern is that I've got the manual gearbox. I had my last Audi remapped and the extra torque created put a bit more stress on the clutch, to the extent that it would slip fractionally if I accelerated too hard in the higher gears at lower revs. Only had 30k miles on the clutch!

Given the weight of the X5 anyway, I would have thought a remap would shorten the life of the clutch on a manual box. Not a prob for the autos with the torque converters I imagine? I know we manual drivers are a rare breed, but it would be good to have an informed opinion on this?

The auto box is a limiting factor for remapping! You will get more out of a remap with a manual than us poor auto boys

) You can always tell your mapper not to push the car too hard if your worried about clutch slip.

I had my car remapped (not memory flashed) at Performance HQ and it totally transformed the car! Made it so much better to drive, goes like stink when you ask it to!
No downsides either apart from you use more fuel because you cant help planting the foot

Vag group cars clutches have to be limited to what the clutch can handle which is 300lbs/ft

I've have many customers that have had a remap by other companies
There clutches needed changing 2-3 times a year
Vag car clutches are small are
Paired to BMW's
I've looked at the mapping on these cars and found that the torque limiters have been raised to more than the clutch can handle
After adjusting the torque limiters there clutches have been fine

BMW clutches are over engineered to take a lot more

You will find it's the other way around
Auto gear boxes can take a lot more torque than a manual

That's why 335d,535d,x3.0sd are all autos as the manual gear box will not cope with the torque
