Hi,

I have been an X5 owner for just over 4 years having bought a 2004 facelift E53 4.4 sport from BMW as an AUC.

Having just sold the car for what a good price (it was immaculate and low miles) I am about to sign up for a late 2007 3.0d SE. The 4.4 was awesome and did everything and more for us, the only drawback was the 18mpg (though 27 on long runs).

I would like to know if I am going to realistically see a good 10mpg improvement over the old car, I realise its not going to have quite the same grunt, sound etc as the 4.4 but I guess you can't have it all. I would also be interested in getting the new car remapped which is how I ended up on this forum in the first place!

Welcome Andre,

High twenties is very achievable with the diesel X5 subject to your style of driving and where you do most of the driving.  Urban stop start driving is always going to be hard on mpg just by the fact that its a heavy beast and takes a lot of energy to get her moving. 

Plenty of threads about remapping and Jason is a wealth of helpful knowledge.

What would you expect that given the previous X5 would do 18mpg doing the school run, a bit of local shopping but not really sitting in traffic I should see from a 2007 3.0d? I am guessing there are more gains to be had from the diesel on longer runs. What do you guys driving the E70 3.0d normally get?

Anyone had a remap on one of these and would you recommend it?

I'm not far from Jason so would be interested in getting something done fairly soon after buying the car to get maximum gain from it.

Just noticed and read the write up by Black X5 and subsequent discussions, probably answers all my questions.

My 56 plate E53 3.0 diesel is averaging 25/27MPG on a 13 mile commute on single track roads, and runs into town, shopping etc. We ran 360 miles from Grantham to Pitlochry yesterday A1/A66/M6/M74 etc and the X returned 33.8MPG, cruise on, about 75MPH. These are just the numbers from the OBC but I have no reason to doubt them.

I don't know if there are any differences between an E70 dieesel engine and an E53, but these are real world figures with no modifications/chip etc.

I hope this is helpful.

if the OBC MPG stats are to be believed I've averaged 32.8 MPG in mine mixed motoring over 6k miles

Really helpful information and very promising, we are missing our E53 4.4i but now looking forward to getting the E70 3.0d on Monday.

Certainly wont miss the fuel bills.

I had a 4.4 e53 and could not even get 18mpg, moved to a new 40d and now get at least 31 around town and have had over 40 on a run!

It is also far quicker than the V8, so I would not think twice. The 30d is less powerfully but the saving on fuel makes it usable.

Much depends on driving style, nature of roads used (hills, bends, roundabouts take their toll), load carried and length of journeys.  My E70 (August 2007 model, ie before the later efficient dynamics package reduced consumption and lowered CO2 emissions) returned 29.7 over 19000 miles between the last service intervals which included about 4000 towing a 1700kg caravan in England and to Switzerland. Since the last service 4.5k ago its currently showing 30.3 but no towing. Most of my journeys are with me in it alone and over 10 miles on mainly open roads with some town work so the engine is usually hot.

I see 25mpg in winter and 27mpg in summer from my 2012 40d. It's mostly town mileage though. I've had 33mpg on a 325 mile motorway run (fully loaded with children, dogs and a roof box!)

I should add that I used to get 17.5 mpg out of my 3.5 litre V6 petrol RX so am as happy as Larry with the X5's consumption even though I understand people think its poor - it depends what you're coming from

Given that you say most driving is town driving I would say your return is very good.

Right mr Snipez, I've asked this before and you ignored me,  ::) what was you average mileage in the previous X and what are you getting now?

Oh sorry! Was about 24 in the 40d and 26.5 in the 50d but I haven't done too many miles yet. Just happy to be getting good consumption I guess (easy to please lol)
