Had to happen during Christmas!

Iv just been stung with a quote for £1400 to get essentials (cv joints, bushes, etc) done. I saw the CV joint and its actually split!

Typical, you take your car in to get a £100 job done but comes out with even more issues!

Sorry to hear that. What is the full breakdown of work for £1400???

Sounds like a lot of money for bushes/ arms/ CV gaiters etc.  Are the parts OE or patent? Main dealer, indy or other garage?

Do you need to do all the work at once can some be deferred? Or can some of the work be done by you, or have you tried in Indy for a price?

Failing that there is always the credit card to defer payment for extra few weeks.

List is as follows

Front tca arms x2
Wishbone arms x2
Cv joint x1
Cv gators x2
Anti roll drop links x1

I'm going to have to prioritise by urgency so the cv joint is going to be done on Thursday.

£1400 was quoted by Jason's garage all in price. I don't actually own a credit card... Never needed one. I'm hoping the work can be broken down over 3 months as I drive maybe 30 miles a week I'm hoping it will work out!

Shop around mate. That seems very expensive. Perhaps try giving your local GSF a call and price the parts yourself. Ask for decent brand parts. I think you maybe surprised at how much you could save

sorry to hear this mate,

what is the symptom you're trying to fix, with the arms and bushes.. other than the cv joint?

is the suspension noisy or is there a vibration, do you have uneven tyre wear etc?

its nice to have all this perfect but i'm just thinking whether all that is necessary..

Don't know if it helps but I paid £115 for two drop links and a front rear arm apparantly premium quality made by febi and £65 for the cv joint and £6 for the boot kit for the other joint all with a two year gauntee from Andrew page motor factors labour should be only around two hours

Right, don't bother with cv joint and gaiters, a pair of brand new drive shafts is £54 on ebay, had a set in my old x5 and were perfect so that's all joints and boots in one, drop links £30 the pair, bottom arm £50 each, front arm as bush only to put in £10 each that's £195 in parts the labour should be 3hrs tops I would say and they're all self doing so to get the drive shaft out you have to take the arms\links off so just put new ones on as you build it back up, £1400 to me almost sounds more than a dealer, I would certainly not pay that, also all the above parts I had on my old x5 and they did 40k miles and were still fine so don't be pushed into over priced stuff that's no better quality!

Jayana - I have a vibration under braking from 60mph tp 55mph. There is also a clicking sound when i turn full lock. No suspension noises or anything else. The bushes didnt even look to bad to me when i was shown them, they just looking slightly stressed, they didnt look like cracks to me but then what would i know  ::)

Shad - I prioritised the CV related items as the rubber has actually split and i was told i was on borrowed time, I had seen the pair of of driveshafts for the price you have mentioned, again i wasnt sure on quality and i thought that fitting all of that may push the price of labour up. Im strapped on time aswell due to the festive period and i dont know how long the parts would take to come in etc. But its definately food for thought. Im going to be doing a bit of driving over the coming week and with a split gator i wanted this done asap.

Gazzi - I can get the cv kit from Euro CP for £53, not sure on quality but I know Raj has them fitted (read in a previous post) and no complaints from him so far.

I have contemplated sourcing parts from ebay on the cheap and asking a local garage to fit them.

I have no tools to do all this myself and even if i did, the weather is absolute pants outside and work and preganant wife takes all my time at the moment.

Its a conundrum.

The labour to fit full drive shafts should be less than fitting a cv and boot kit

Really? and the shaft comes with all the bits and bobs? i.e. the CV joints and gators?

Sorry im just not very mechanically minded.
