Just replaced the Sat Nav/Radio head unit in my 2005 BMW X5 E53 with exactly the same model that I saw working perfectly in the donor car. Radio/CD player working great but I can't get the screen to activate, it's definitely got power to the screen but no display whatsoever! I've received conflicting advise about codes or reprogramming but need some definite instruction before I have to resort to the expensive trip to BMW. I'd appreciate any help!

Firstly I'd install it the right way round as in the pic it's upside down...... >:D
Sorry, on a serious note, I didn't think it would need to be coded, etc especially as it appears to be working from what you have said.
But then in another thread regarding the DSP as the OP had to code it as again it wouldn't work properly to start with.

It hasn't got some odd BMW anti-theft system which links each device together by any chance has it? Car system checks the VIN and refuses to play as not matched?

Actually what a plonker I am. It should work no problem as the is no coding required. Reason I know this for sure after racking my brain was my headunit was sold to a guy off here and we fitted it there and then to ensure it worked and no dead pixels, etc. worked straight away after just plugging it straight in. Played his DVDs straight off and everything.

What was wrong with your old unit?
If the symtoms are the same with the new unit then it points elsewhere.
The screnn and controls are exactly that, just a screen and controls, the brain of this unit is located under the boot board and in the nearside rear quater
