the X5 is still going strong.  I just wondered how much people have paid at an Indy to get the handbrake lever replaced.

Hi, I don't know the answer to your post but just wondered why you need this doing? I  just had a problem with the ratchet mechanism chewing its 3rd and 4th teeth for some unknown reason. I sorted it with a hammer and cold chisel !

Dont know about 'Lever' had cable etc replace when a 'ticking' noise appeared it was not releasing pads 'etc'

Hi, I just took it for a service and the handbrake had been doing pretty much nothing as it was just clicking twice - anything past that point and it just sprang back to the second click point (hope that makes sense). It wasn't able to be adjusted because the teeth had sheered off.  The MOT is due in a week or so, so thought best to get it replaced so it's booked in for tomorrow.

The chisel idea sounds a good cheap fix though!

The hammer and chisel has worked to temporarily reinstate the chewed teeth. Don't know how long it will last for tho.
I would be interested to know the cost of a replacement ratchet mechanism just in case mine fails again...

i wasnt quite so rough as a chisel, this happened on my old x5 i lost 3 teeth so i used a small triangular shaped file and re filed the notches back on

Yes, that would have been my preferred fix but couldn't find a suitable hacksaw to fit down the narrow lever access. Removing the  trim surrounding the handbrake would be ideal but looked like a lot of work involved.
I wonder if this is a common issue on the x?  :blink:

Must be common enough as mine is doing it an all and I need to get it fixed before MOT next month! Best I get the chisel sharpened!
