Starter Motor

I have put a couple of posts up previously about the current drain I appear to have on my 2002 4.4i X5. I can fully charge the battery, use the car for a day then come to it the following day and the battery is completely flat, yet I can also go a week and it be fine.

I have replaced the fsu as I discovered this was faulty and causing the fan to run even when the car was off. however the problem with the current drain is still there. :(

I have search various forums and read about the starter motors failing and pulling a huge current which unless driven miles the alternator can't replace.

On starting the car tonight with a charged battery it seemed to crank quite slowly and laboured. could this
be a sign of a starter motor issue.

Also is the starter motor issue known on the 4.4i, as all the forum posts I can see dont state an engine type.

Thanks
Andy

Slow cranking was definitely the symptom I had.  It was caused by the starter drawing more current than the battery could deliver (i.e in excess of the 830A CCA).  It was more apparent in cold weather.  I don't know what make the original starter was, but the replacement was a Bosch, fitted under warranty.  Mine was an '05 3.0D Sport Auto.

Well thats a start then, pardon the pun. I think I will have to get it to an auto electrician to test it, if nothing else it will rule something else out.

You can do a basic test your self if your dash as the hidden menu, I pulled up the volts reading on the dash and was around 12 ish and below when the car was running. Them Figures was with a failing starter motor, now I get about 13.5-13.9 depending on what else is been powered IE lights, heater, fans.

well i have tested the car and it draws about 160-180amps on start up so i am ruling the starter motor out, looks like a trip to the auto electrician is in order
