Solved the damn boot rattle!! :D
Had an annoying occasional rattle from the boot latch since I bought the X5 and read a few posts on the net about fixes with rubber pads, adjustments, grease etc.. etc..
To my mind if some X5s don't do it and some do, it is not a case of adding rubber blocks from the bottom of chairs or sticking tape on things! Something is obviously wrong and I wanted it to be right not bodge it.
Sure enough after adjusting the stoppers, tightening up the latches and generally having a good look eventually I found one of the two tiny plastic caps on the rubber blocks of the central boot striker missing.
It had obviously somehow been knocked off or was never there and as it "clamps" the latch, was an obvious culprit.
So £12 later for a complete new striker from BMW (can't buy just the cap of course ) and sure enough, NO RATTLE!! Car is so much better to drive now, completely solid and tight and I am chuffed.

Re: Solved the damn boot rattle!! :D
Hopefully it will help some people as its a common problem on the X53. I have read endless posts on the net about sticking on bits of foam and extra pads etc.. BMW got it right in the first place, just make sure its all there and all adjusted correctly and there will be no rattle

Mine has just started rattling. Could you please post a photo of the bit you replaced and where it is.

Just found the cap missing on my nearside strike pad !
Thanks a million...............I would be lying to say the odd tailgate rattle hasn't caused me to despair.
thedweeb............I cant confirm 100% I am talking of samer part but assuming its one of the same :
Open tailgate> Locate lower taligate, (female) catch at top & in centre > On opposing outer edges you should see 2 rubber blocks >Each should have a plastic cap on top >Abscence of same evident by visibilty of holes in top of rubber block.
Jay - Am I right in thinking you mean part number 51248408859? ...............Item 18 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=41&fg=60
Just striopped lower tailgate in hope tio find the offending cap lurking in dark recessses of metal & trim- Sadly not found so looks like sourcing complete part here too.

Solved the damn boot rattle!! :D
Great, certainly not just mine then
The part is number 18 on this diagram. It is listed in the upper tailgate for some reason but is definitely the lower central striker.
About £13 all in from the stealers
Adjust it right down when you fit it too as it pulls the boot down better.

Thanks.................Sorry you posted when I was editing my last after also performing a realaoem search, (after head scratching initilally on lower diagram first) !
For anyone else make sure you have the correct torque/hex thingy to remove the striker plate if required. You can inspect the part without removing same ot trim.
If removing to rectify. Lower tail trim comes apart by removing screws to top behind 2 x cap covers and under refelectors, others visble by lifting lower flap, centre section prised gently on tabs at lower edge and by levering poppers closer to top edge.
Right..........now to source the part !

Re: Solved the damn boot rattle!! :D
I got loads of rattles in the boot, but they all appear to be the plastic C pillar covers. Need to get round to sorting it as it does drive me potty...

I can't stand any rattles in my cars. Even to the point where I get the missus to take things out of her handbag that rattle!

LOL Jay. I totally agree with ya though. Rattles drive me completely mad. I just need better weather or somehwere I can start stipping out bits of interior to work out the sources.

To AW8 or g60renshaw
Excuse my ignorance here but does the striker plate (Part Number 51248408859) that you have replaced on your X’s include the two rubber stops and the small plastic covers? It doesn't seem very clear on the realom site.........
The rear hatch on my X has just started rattling as though something is loose. When I looked more closely one of the rubber stops has gone and there is no plastic cap on the other.
Thanks in advance……………
