Hi Guys,

Having spent a little time playing with various toys, I've noticed that the picture quality from top view is poor, almost mistish.  The reverse view is excellent.  Pics below, what's your thoughts?

Did you clean the lenses from the cameras under the mirrors? That is what generates the top view.

Mine is very sharp.

Just to add - as it is from the side mirrors, don't expect too much at the back though.

(pic not that great as an example as that is the only one I have - ambient light makes a lot of difference).

Shit on the lens.

Spray from the road - looks wet?

If you wipe them, they go back to normal.

Simples :)

Now that to me doesn't look so good either, maybe expecting too much.  ::)

The only other suggestion I can offer is that the car has been cleaned 'enthusiastically' with an inappropriate something!!  I only ever use a lens cloth on mine, but with the lenses being plastic and the cameras no more than web-cams, the quality is never going to be up to a lot really - despite BMW charging as much as a good Canon 'L' lens with proper glass would be in the shops!!

And as you surmise, they're cr@p in low light.  Given the amount of 'clever' electronics on board, you would have expected that someone might have suggested turning the puddle lights on when top view is selected in the dark......but then again, may be not!!  That would have been implementing something the 'right' way. ;)

Ours are perfect, reflecting on your 'enthusiastic cleaning' might it be worth a polish with a light abrasive/polish to remove any scratches?

+1. Watch out for the blind spots at the rear corners - as the manual warns never rely on just the cameras.

That image of mine was at pitch black with the garage lights on only. I did not have a day light picture available but that is perfect during the day.

Ok, I'll clean lenses once again and take pics in bright sun light and see what you lot think of them.  Maybe a while, Northern Ireland and bright sunlight don't exactly go hand in hand!  :'(

Meguiars (sp?) do a specific plastic lense gentle cutting solution.  Try that (I have one and it's really quite good)

And there was me thinking that all I had to do was look out of the conveniently placed pieces of glass to see what was around me  ;)
