You're right on all counts. Crap on interior space and fuel economy (wife has a petrol version).
BUT I've had it mapped and it's better to drive and much quicker. Speak to Jason and ask what he can offer. They are usually just detuned derivatives.
They make great second cars (don't mean that in any snobbish manner) but even better if you can get some nice options with them. Leather, xenons, speaker upgrades, etc.
Tell your son to jump on to
www.babybmw.net and READ all night. That's his homework. If he changes his mind he may have a chance to rethink that deposit he put down. Or he'll have more ideas and more to spend on it!
)
Btw, is it an SE or MSport? Latter is better handling (probably one of the only two reasons the car sells so well). The other is of course the badge.....

Personally I wouldn't encourage a remap unless fairly confident he would show sensible restraint.
That of course begs the question that if showing restraint should he need a remap ?
Obviously there are insurance implications if a remap was declared. I suspect a standard map 118d or 120d might be easier to insure for a 19 year old than a declared rempapped 116d. I am not naive though and appreciate many car owners have had undeclared remaps.........(care argubaly needed discussing same online).
A quick bit of internet searching indicates 2009 cars all have variations of N47D20 1995cc engines whether 118d 118d 120d or 123d. I have no idea on differences between them such as turbo specs etc.
Hard call to make my 20 yr old drives a 140HP car also available in 190HP guise. Car is owned, registered & insured in her name. I feel happier for now with experience being increased in the lesser HP variant.
When I was 19 I spent many miles giving it full beans on B-Roads whether in underpowered cars or those a little more capable........................a lot is down to the individual, ( & dare I say the passengers).
Remap experts on end of phone will quickly tell you what their claims are.

sorry Sanj, didnt mean to cause anyone any offence, I thought I was being reprimanded for bringing up the "remap subject.!"
When I re read through it today I got the wrong end of the stick, so to speak.
Thanks for your info, and its a 116d SE with PDC, Cruise ,climate control,Front fogs, Xeons. 70K miles but mint. same colour as your X5 too!!
I thought it was OK for space inside, I sat in the back seat behind him and he is 6-1 .
Im only5-9 though. Its a lot bigger in side than his sisters 3 door Fiesta though.
Thanks for the input.

No apology needed.
Everyone knows I'm a twat anyway!

Mentioning remaps isn't an issue on here. Just the dodgy maps (the satnav kind)....

My reprimands are quite clear & should leave littlein way of misunderstanding
No I was just advising against openly declaring a car has been re-mapped and insurance intentionally not advised............Some could use this info against the poster as it could be argued insurance might be void on any remapped car so concerned...............Remote chance but thought it helpful to discretly advise re same by my gentle hinting.
Oh & all other points made by others duly noted

These 116d can be remapped to 170-180bhp
Or for your son we can reduce the power if wanted with before and after dyno runs to prove
