Removal of the rear door cards is covered very well on the X5world site under the topic for replacing the window operating mechanism. The door cards have to come off for the rear sun blind installation and this ‘How-to’ covers the issues around the sun shades only. Apologies that I have mixed up some of the pictures between right and left rear doors – I hope this doesn’t confuse things too much.
First – what do you need? Well obviously you need to have replacement door cards with the sun blinds built in, as well as the blind with the rear quarter light blind in it as well. This fits over the pillar between the rear door moving window and the fixed rear quarter light. You also need different window surround trims. The ones for the sun shades don’t have a vertical trim covering the pillar between the moving window and the rear quarter light – that’s where the built in roller blind fits. You also need the hooks that the rear sun blinds hook onto, a small clip and a few extra screws. All will be revealed…
Here are the two different window trims:

First, remove the rear door card. The X5world article covers this really well. One additional point I picked up is that when you have all the bits ‘off’ ready to finally pull the door card away from the door, pull it vertically upwards, as there is a push on clip that releases easiest this way. When it comes off don’t let it come too far or you may break the small light guide that directs light from a small LED onto the door handle.

It’s delicate, but if you do break it a bit of plastic-compatible superglue will probably repair it.
Once the door card is fully disconnected put it to one side. Next, disconnect the window trim anti-trap connector. It’s a bit fiddly as it is wrapped in sticky black tape but it does free off quite easily.

The window trim now has to be removed and replaced. There are a couple of small push-clips, one at each end of the trim that easily pull out to give you a start. You can also see where one of these has been pulled out in the picture above.
Once the trim is off, check that you have removed all the clips that held the old trim to the door frame: the new trims come complete with new clips. Before you fit the new trims remove the three clear plastic patches that cover the holes in the door frame where the retention hooks will fit. The new trim can then be simply pushed into place. Make sure it fits snugly especially in the corners and push in the push-clips at the ends of the trim. Reconnect the anti-trap wire.
Now you can replace the door trim again as described in the X5world article. The tricky bit is reconnecting the door handle LED just before you are ready to mount the card back onto the door. The clip in the centre of the door that was released by pulling vertically upwards on the door card should be put back onto the door card and it then snaps into place when you push the card against the door itself.
Re-fix all the door mounting screws and edge push-clips. For four doors I managed to break or lose about half a dozen. The dealer will sell you a pack of 25 for about £8. They are handy to have – you may break or lose more!
Note that a door card with built in blinds has an additional screw at the bottom of the quarter light pillar.

Next, take the rear quarter light blind and clip it to the quarter light pillar. At the top you will need a small clip that just helps to keep it in place once fitted.

The blind clips to the pillar very snugly. If you want to remove the blind again later you can get a thin blade into a small gap on the front side of the blind housing and free off the clip slightly – though I doubt if it will be much of a hindrance.

All that is left is to push the new retaining hooks into the holes in the door frame. It helps if you gently pull the trim away from the door a little. Once each hook is in the hole in the door and snug against the frame it is secured in place with another new screw.
That’s it – job done. With tinted rear windows and the blinds up it’s great for watching the rear head rests screens and these are hardly visible now so the car is a little less of a vandal-magnet. This is the job all done. You can see the blinds retracted into the door card and the pillar and the hooks in the top of the window trim and the rear or the quarter light.

I easily did three doors in an afternoon, having messed about with the first one a week or so before, learning the lessons I have described here..
Good luck if you want to try it – I am pleased with the results.
