3.0d performance after remap?

I'm in this dilemma as to whether to buy an LPG 4.4 or whether to get 3litre diesel and have it remapped.

Having owned a e39 3.0d touring I loved the performance after it was mapped from 184 to 218bhp, but what equally impressed me was the fuel consumption. I really want to make the right choice car wise and would appreciate knowing what sort of consumption the 3.0d guys are achieving, ideally after a remap?

Great to know who's had it done, who did it and how the drivability/consumption has changed since?

I have one, diesel.

Goes really well, great 'driveability' if that makes sense. Great gear change and smooth progress!

Love the performance (torque) and the fuel economy is nice too (knowing its the best the X range can give me), oh and 26 town, 36 motorway (depending on load).

Try Jason at BW Chiptune - mention quite a bit on here! ;)

Thanks SanJ......those figures are now tempting me. I had heard that the 3.0d wasn't that good on fuel and so I was considering a 4.4 on lpg.

Out of interest is yours a facelift model, which I guess is 218bhp as standard.

What's your current map setting?

Would be interested to hear some other figures from people.....

4.8is BW Rmap, 17 to 19 MPG arond town and 24 to 26 on a run easy enough.

Goes well enough as you would expect

Facelift, no idea on map settings tho... I opted for the Eco/Power (less smoke out the back in the end).

I don't regret the power v's economy at all. Enough for me when I carry the kids (after all). Passes most sleepy heads in the morning anyway!

My old 2005 E53 with no remap gave 25-26 around town and 31-33 on the motorway.  I did once see more but that was driving in cr8p traffic on the M6 south from Manchester to home (170+ miles).  Even standard it's no slouch.  And they do weigh in excess of 2.1tonnes!

Thanks for the input so far guys. We took a facelift 3.0d out today and I'm happy with the torque etc and driveability, though the big plume of blue smoke on start up was somewhat alarming.....I don't remember my E39 3.0d ever doing anything lke that....thoughts?

Ive read up on the initial plume of smoke on start up, it is because the engine management system overfuels the car on start up, kind of automatic choke, hence the car will fire up without the need to wait for the glow plugs to warm up.This is the reason for the smoke, not valve stem oil seals or anything.
Mine does it and I know it has been mentioned on here before.

Thanks Horizon......valve stem seals takes me back to my old days playing with these......that said the red one didn't suffer that problem as the engine had £000's spent on it! The old GM CIH engine would always pass some oil down the stem seals if they sat for too long.

You also have to remember that not every cylinder fires immediately so for a couple of engine turns you get fuelling but not necessarily ignition, and hence a small (and it should be small) puff of blue smoke from the unburnt fuel.  It is more noticeable in cold mornings/engine starts and should not be there (or if it is, barely noticeable) on a warm/hot start.

For what its worth my LPG gives me slightly better figures than diesel, and im a heavy footed driver!

On petrol around town i average around 17 miles per gallon (London start stop)
and on the motorway i average around 23 miles per gallon on motorway (Fast lane all the way!)

and i top up at anything between 68.9 and 74.9 pence a litre.

I'm really beginning to contemplate a V8, we already have straight 6 BMW in the house so may as well have a V8 sound-track too:)

I'd be interested to know what sort of range you're getting and how long it takes for your system to switch from petrol to gas and does it really work out that a litre of gas goes far as litre of fuel?

I'm sure Jason mentioned that the 218 bhp oil burner with the mixed map gives approx 258 bhp and 580nm of torque, don't quote me mind as my wife says I am prone to talking sh!te.... :)

The mixed map with reduced smoke (those from the meet will know what I mean) is so much nicer to drive than the out of the box map.  Overtaking becomes a breeze especially on the m-way, 70 - points in no time at all, and generally a more responsive experience and better drivability. Definitely worth it if you go for Derv.

I have a BRC system which I am happy with. It normally switches over when the temp starts to rise, not all the way but when its about 1/4 warm.

Iv got the straight six but would have gotten a v8 if I could, people have claimed no or very little difference in consumption.

To give you an idea of range I full up around £45-£55 (depends on the matter of gas at the time of filling) at around 74p and I get 220-250 of London stop start driving.

The only issue now is that I work in the city and no longer commute to work which is making lpg less viable.
